歡迎來到《一分鐘英語》。

Have you ever been shopping and heard someone say: I don't want to break the bank.

購物的時候,聽見別人說“I don't want to break the bank”(我可不想傾家蕩產)吧!

This is a simple phrase that you can easily add to your American English vocabulary.

這是一個很簡單的短語,可以把它收錄到你的美式英語詞彙中。

Let's hear it in a conversation.

讓我們一起在對話中聽聽。

I wanted to buy a new car. I saw one at the dealership yesterday, but it was so expensive!

我不想買新車。我昨天在經銷商那裏看到了一輛,但是太貴了。

How expensive?

有多貴?

very expensive -- way too much for me.

對我來說,相當貴。

I can't afford it, and I don't want to break the bank.

我買不起。我可不想傾家蕩產。(break the bank)

This phrase means to use up all of your money, and it comes from gambling.

這個短語的意思是花光你所有的錢,它是賭博的行話。

If a gambler wins more money than the casino has on hand, it's called "breaking the bank."

如果一個賭徒贏得錢比賭場手頭的錢還要多,那麼這就叫做“breaking the bank”(使莊家的錢輸光)。

And when someone has no money, you can say he is "broke."

當某人沒錢的時候,你可以稱他爲“broke”(破產)。

And that's English in a Minute.
