Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States, and he was also the only United States president to hold a patent (專利).

Lincoln was born on February 12,1809. As a young man, he had a strong interest in new technology. He once worked on the Mississippi River as a boat worker. One day, the boat rushed onto a dam (水壩) and was set free only after a long time. In later years, while traveling on the Great Lakes, Lincoln's ship met similar trouble. These two similar experiences led him to think about his invention. Abraham Lincoln received a patent on May 22,1849. The invention was used to help out the boats or ships that met trouble in shallow water or beach. But it was never on the market. Abraham Lincoln made the model for his patent with his own hands out of wood. It is on display at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of American History.

In 1858, Abraham Lincoln called the introduction of patent laws “one of the three most important developments in the world's history”, along with the discovery of America and the perfection of printing.

The program hopes to hire women aged 19 to 55 years old from the villages. “We want to hire full-time ‘mothers’ to make sure they won't think about other work,” Liu said. “We want local women because they understand local languages and cultures.” The program in Sichuan is an experiment, and Liu said, “If it is a successful model, we will start it in the whole country.”

We can express thoughts and feelings and send sounds and pictures on our smartphones today. We can't send tastes, smells or touch. But some scientists in Britain are trying to develop a way for smartphones to do that.

To give users a sense of taste, Adrian David Cheok and some other scientists designed two electrodes (電極片). “You put these two electrodes in your mouth, you put your tongue in between and then your tongue will get a virtual taste perception (虛擬味覺) in your brain,” said Professor Cheok. They have already created sour, salty, sweet and bitter tastes.

A device called “Scentee” permits users to have the sense of smell. Scientists put a Scentee into a smartphone, and it can spray (噴射) small clouds of fragrance, including flowers, fruits and coffee. Professor Cheok says the person speaking can activate (激活) the device. Scentee holds a container with about 100 different smells. The container must be replaced when all the smells run out.

The sense of touch comes from a ring-like device. It is connected wirelessly to the smartphone. “I can be in London and my friend can be in Tokyo, and I can squeeze my finger and then they'll get a squeeze on their finger through the Internet. It's a way of touch communication with small mobile devices,” Professor Cheok said.

Professor Cheok hopes devices like these will someday be added to houses. He says they may change the future of long-distance communication.

Many countries all over the world have National Parks. There are about 7,000 National Parks around the world. Most of them protect natural settings as well as the plants and animals that live there, but a few are in towns and cities.

Are there National Parks in England?

There are nine National Parks in England. The first three were the Peak District, the Lake District and Dartmoor, which were all named as National Parks in 1951. Others followed afterwards, such as the North York Moors in 1952, the New Forest in 2005 and the South Downs in 2010.

Are there any problems in the National Parks?

First, there are about 110 million visitors to the parks every year, bringing many benefits to the areas but creating problems too. Many popular towns and villages can be swamped(使淹沒) by visitors. This results in overcrowded car parks and roads choked with traffic. Life can be difficult for people who live there, as more and more gift shops and cafes are opened instead of those everyday shops; in popular areas, house prices can become too high for local people making it hard for them to stay in the area.

Another major problem is litter. In the parks it is a particular danger to animals. Broken glass can also cause fires by focusing the rays of the sun. When these start in wild places, they are much harder to control and can damage large areas very quickly.

How can people help?

All National Parks in England promote the Countryside Code, which tells people how to take care of their environment. If these rules are followed, the National Parks will be protected and continue to give pleasure to many people for a long time.

73. What were the first three National Parks in England?

74. What two main problems do the National Parks in England have?

75. Do you think it necessary to protect the National Parks? Why or Why not?

The next morning, when he came downstairs, the shoemaker saw two pairs of beautiful new shoes! So it went on for weeks. Every night the shoemaker cut out the leather and left it on his table. And every morning there were pretty shoes waiting to be sold. Then the shoemaker lived a happy life.

What happens when we want to do something impossible? It may seem unlikely, but it is our true nature. It may seem silly, but it is our heart’s purpose.

Once there was a strong camel. She liked dancing very much. She wanted to be a ballet (芭蕾舞) dancer. “To make every movement a thing of beauty,” said the camel, “is my dream.”

Again and again she practiced. She repeated the five basic positions a hundred times each day. She worked for long months under the hot sun, but not once did she think of stopping.

At last the camel said, “Now, I am a dancer.” She gave a performance and danced before an invited group of friends. She did very well. When her dance was over, she made a deep bow.

There was no applause (鼓掌). Instead, everyone laughed at her.

“I must tell you frankly,” said one of her friends, “you are lumpy and humpy. You don’t have any talent in dancing. You are, like the rest of us, simply a camel. You are just an animal. You are not and never will be a ballet dancer!” With these words, they moved away across the sand, laughing and joking.

“How wrong they are!” said the camel. “I have worked hard. I will be a good dancer. I will dance and dance just for myself.” That is what she did. It gave her many years of pleasure.

She practiced hard and made much progress in her dancing skills. Occasionally, the camel was chosen to perform at an animal party before her old friends. The camel was lucky because she knew exactly what she wanted and she never gave up.

C. To prepare for a party. D. To show her great ability.

55. What did the other camels think of the camel’s dancing at first?

A. They thought poorly of it. B. They seemed calm about it.

C. They enjoyed it excitedly. D. They were surprised at it.

56. Which of the following words can best describe the camel?

A. Crazy. B. Confident. C. Proud. D. Unlucky.

57. What can we learn from the story?

A. Choose a job you are good at. B. Dance for the pleasure of others. C. Success results from hard work. D. Dancing needs more practice.

On the first day of the New Year 2017,I made up my mind to go to Thailand to teach English as a volunteer. At the beginning, all I cared about was travelling and seeing the world. I didn’t know how fantastic my life would be in the coming months!

My journey began with attending TESOL certification(認證) course in my home state of Florida last February. After 3 weekends of study and another 40 hours’ study online, I received my TESOL certificate(證書).

I was asked to contact Philip, who is Program Director of the Teach in Thailand. After discussing with Philip,I chose my school and after many months of excitement,I finally flew to Thailand in early April and I couldn’t wait to explore the country!

After a few weeks of single travel,I met up with Philip and the other new teachers in my program in Bangkok. It was great to meet other people who were on the same journey as me,see some cool sights and walk in Thailand’s cities! After that, I attended the weeklong seminar(研討會). At the end of the seminar, I was transported to my school—Anuban Buriram Primary School.

I truly love my job—I teach Grades 5 and 6 and I have the cleverest and most active kids in the world. It’s a truly fantastic thing that you can see the difference you make in someone else’s life, right in front of you!

Buriram is a small city with green rice fields. People here are more friendly than anyone I’ve ever met—I’ve never been anywhere where a smile is so easily received, where everyone you pass is so friendly to say “Hello” and “Good morning”. I’ve been taken out to countless dinners, and been lent a guitar,a camera, and I am given Thai treats and the most delicious fresh fruits many times a week. I only hope to repay(回報) them in the future.

When watching sports events, we often notice athletes wearing earphones before the competition. They keep their eyes shut, and gently nod along the beats. It seems the music is giving them power and cheering them up for the competition. But is there any science behind such practices? [來源:學科網]

According to a new research, it turns out there is. Music makes us feel powerful, but not all songs have the same effect.

The research was led by Dennis Hsu of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in the US. His team had people listen to 31 songs of different types. The listeners felt powerful after listening to some songs, for example Queen’s We Will Rock You and 2 Unlimited’s Get Ready for This.

Researchers also found that high-power music made people want to take control in social events and come first in competition.

That matters a lot in sports. “It’s commonly said that sports are 90 percent mental(心理的) and only 10 percent physical(身體的),” The Huffington Post reported.

Great athletes know this idea well. NBA player Kobe Bryant, for example, often puts on big headphones and even falls into deep thought to boost his game and reduce his anxiety(焦慮).

Why does music have magical power? Hsu’s team explained: when people hear music that expresses a sense of power, they mimic (模擬) these feelings in their mind.

When choosing music, we also need to look at the type of music, according to researchers.

In the research by the Music in Exercise and Sport Group at Brunel University in London, they found that pop was perfect for slower tasks. If you’re warming up or cooling down after exercises, pop songs are the correct choice. Dance music was found to be best suitable for strength and weight training.

62. With the first paragraph, the writer mainly wants to ______.

A. prove the music can help athletes win the competition

B. describe athletes’ common habits before sports games

C. get readers to wonder whether music matters in sports

D. explain why athletes like listening to music bef ore games

63. Which of the following might Dennis Hsu agree with?

A. Listening to music always makes an athlete come first in their competition.

B. People listening to powerful music may produce similar feelings in their mind.

C. Most athletes still don’t know the influence of high-power music on their games.

D. The result of a game is mainly influenced by the physical condition of the players.

64. What does the underlined word “boost” in the sixth paragraph probably mean?

A. control B. lose C. continue D. improve

65. The wrier makes his points clear mainly ______.

A. by comparing B. by giving examples

C. by giving general rules D. by using English sayings

same class today.

After the bell rang, every student sat in his or her seat impatiently. Then, one by one, the

teacher called our names.

As each paper was given back to the correct student, the front of the answer paper would always be turned to face the ground and the paper itself would be slightly folded (摺疊) to prevent anyone from seeing.

In fact, folding each test paper is a way to make sure that each student sees only his or her own scores. The scores are seen as private information not to be announced or shown to others. As a way to keep the students' score records secret, each student is given an online account (帳號) with which to check his or her grades posted on the official school website.

Protecting students' private information always comes first in US schools that want to free students from unnecessary pressure. School reports are guarded closely to prevent poor grades from damaging a student's dignity and reputation (尊嚴和聲譽), which are for himself or herself only.

However, some insist that although students' feelings and self-dignity are easily hurt, they cannot be forever protected. They say that school also teach their students to make themselves stronger in mind, and the classroom should show the reality of competition in society. Scores that everyone can see might better encourage students to work harder to be better than others.

Today, an increasing number of people are always looking at their mobile phones with their heads down. These people are called the “Heads-down Tribe(低頭族)”. Are you a heads-down tribe member? Heads-down tribe members now can be seen everywhere.

More and more traffic accident are happening because drivers use mobile phones when they are driving. In order to make drivers pay more attention to driving, some new traffic rules have been made. For example, heads-down tribe members who use mobile phones while driving will be fined ¥200.

As we can see above, using mobile phones may cause accidents and even cost money. Besides, more and more interesting things happen to the “Heads-down Tribe”. According to a piece of interesting TV news, a man in America kept using his mobile phone on his way home. Suddenly, he bumped(撞上) into a big lost bear. When he lifted his eyes from the phone, he was so scared that he ran away as quickly as possible.

Another fact is that we can often see people in the restaurant eating face to face but looking at their own mobile phones. It’s strange that they don’t talk to the ones who sit opposite to them during the meal. Some of them even have fun communicating with others on the phone all the time.

What is a good excuse to ask for some time off ? At your school, sickness may be the only one. But in British schools, family events are also well-accepted ones. The National Association of Head Teachers in the UK has written new guidelines about students asking for leave. They will allow parents to take their children out of school for family weddings(婚禮) or funerals(葬禮)or visiting an ill relative.

This is a change from the 2013 guidelines that stopped parents taking children out of school without permission. Otherwise, they could have gotten a fine of 60 pounds (about 600 yuan) or faced court(法庭). Family events were not proper excuse to get permission.

Many parents complained(抱怨) about this rule.

“Taking family events is very important for children growth and that in itself a lesson the schools cannot ever teach our children,”John Hemming, chairman of Parents Want A Say organization, told The Independent.

The new change supports this idea and gives permission to students taking time off for family events. It’s now OK for British students to take time off for family events.

In China, however, many students rarely have time off for family events.

“That’s part of the reason for the generation gap (代溝)between parents and children,” Guo Hongxia, research at National Institute of Education Sciences, wrote in China Education Daily.

“How are you?” is a nice question. It’s a friendly greeting that people in the United States use. __106__ It’s a question that often doesn’t need an answer. The person who asks, “How are you?” expects to hear the answer “Fine,” even if the person isn’t fine. The reason is that “How are you?” isn’t really a question and “Fine” isn’t really an answer. ___107__.

Sometimes, people don’t say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks “Do you agree?” the other person may be thinking, “No, I don’t. I think you are wrong.” It isn’t polite to disagree very strongly, so he might say, “I am not so sure.” ___108___

People also don’t say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking to other people. For example, many conversations over the phone end when one person says, “I’ve got to go now,” or the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse such as “Someone is at the door,” or “Something is burning on the stove.” ___109___ The person who wants to hang up simply doesn’t want to talk any more, but it isn’t polite to say so. An excuse is polite, and it doesn’t hurt the other person’s feelings.

Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an opinion, or ending a conversation, people often don’t say exactly what they are thinking. ___110___

A. This is a nice way to say that you don’t agree with someone.
