apply的用法：
apply的本義是指“將甲物置於乙物之上”,現代英語中仍保留“粘貼”的意思,並由此引申表示將某物“應用”或“運用”於另一物使之發揮或取得實際效益。
apply作“敷,塗”解時,是正式用法,及物動詞僅用於說明書中。在會話中和大多數文字中,則代之以put 〔rub〕 it on, rub〔spread〕 it in。表示“把…敷〔塗〕在…之上”可說apply sth to...。apply後可接藥物、油漆、冰塊等作賓語,而to的賓語可以是物,也可以是人體的某個部位。
apply作“應用,使用”解時,也是及物動詞,可接規章、條例、精力、經驗、用心、智力等作賓語; to的賓語即可是人,也可是物或事。
apply後還可接反身代詞作賓語,表示“把(精力等)投入到…”,其後一般接帶介詞to引起的短語。不用於被動結構,也不用於進行時態。
apply作“適用”解時,指理論、原則等適用,僅用作不及物動詞。
apply作“申請”解時是不及物動詞,常用於“apply ...”結構表示“向…申請…”,介詞to的賓語可以是人或組織機構, for的賓語可以是物或職位等。
apply還可表示親自或用信件直接向掌權者請求同意其要求或申請。
