"We are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book whose pagesare infinite..."

I do not know who wrote those words, but I have always liked them as areminder that the future can be anything we want to make it. We can take themysterious, hazy future and carve out of it anything that we can imagine, justas a sculptor carves a statue from a shapeless stone.

We are all in the position of the farmer. If we plant a good seed, we reapa good harvest. If our seed is poor and full of weeds, we reap a useless we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.

I want the future to be better than the past. I don’t want it contaminatedby the mistakes and errors with which history is filled. We should all beconcerned about the future because that is where we will spend the remainder ofour lives.

The past is gone and static. Nothing we can do will change it. The futureis before us and dynamic. Everything we do will affect it. Each day brings withit new frontiers, in our homes and in our business, if we only recognize are just at the beginning of the progress in every field of humanendeavor.

To a large degree, the measure of our peace of mind is determined by howmuch we are able to live on the present moment. Irrespective of what happenedyesterday or last year, and what may or may not happen tomorrow, the presentmoment is where you are -- always!

Without question, many of us have mastered the neurotic art of spendingmuch of our lives worrying about variety of things -- all at once. We allow pastproblems and future concerns to dominate your present moments, so much so thatwe end up anxious, frustrated, depressed, and hopeless. On the flip side, wealso postpone our gratification, our stated priorities, and our happiness, oftenconvincing ourselves that "someday" will be much better than rtunately, the same mental dynamics that tell us to look toward the futurewill only repeat themselves so that 'someday' never actually arrives. JohnLennone once said, "Life is what is happening while we are busy making otherplans." When we are busy making 'other plans', our children are busy growing up,the people we love are moving away and dying, our bodies are getting out ofshape, and our dreams are slipping away. In short, we miss out on life.

Many people lives as if life is a dress rehearsal for some later date. Itisn't. In fact, no one has a guarantee that he or she will be here tomorrow. Nowis the only time we have, and the only time that we have any control over. Whenour attention is in the present moment, we push fear from our minds. Fear is theconcern over events that might happen in the future -- we won't have enoughhmoney, our children will get into trouble, we will get old and die, whatever.

To combat fear, the best stradegy is to learn to bring your attention backto the present. Mark Twain said,"I have been through some terrible things inlife, some of which actually happened." I don't think I can say it any tice keeping your attention on the here and now. Your effort will pay greatdividends.

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter ofrosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality ofthe imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deepsprings of life.

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of theappetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow oldby deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the y, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure ofwonders, the unfailing appetite for what’s next and the joy of the game ofliving. In the center of your heart and my heart, there is a wireless station;so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, courage and power from man andfrom the infinite, so long as you are young.

When your aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows ofcynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you’ve grown old, even at 20; but aslong as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there’s hope you maydie young at 80.

in my 18 years of life, there have been many things. university days arethe best part of them. i can never forget the days when i stepped into myuniversity. i was impressed by its garden-like campus, its enthusiastic studentsand especially its learning atmosphere. i at once fell in love with it.

after the arduous military training, i get absolutely absorbed in mystudies. the classes given by the teachers are excellent. they provide us withinformation not only from our textbooks but from many other sources as easily arouse my insatiable desire to take in as much as i can.

frankly speaking, at first i had some difficulty following the ver, through my own efforts and thanks to my teachers’ guidance, i maderemarkable progress. now i’ve benefited a lot from lectures and many otheracademic reports.

learning is a long process; i’ll keep exploring in the treasure house ofknowledge to enrich myself. this summer i got out of the ivory tower and enteredthe real world. a publishing house offered me a part-time job in compilation andrevision.

at the beginning i was belittled by my colleagues. but they were reallysurprised when i translated seven english articles over 5,000 words on only oneday. gradually, they began to look at me with respectful eyes. in their opinioni turned out to be a useful and trustworthy colleague.

i also realize that only those who bring happiness for others can be trulyhappy. so i often take part in activities concerning public welfare. i once wentto a barren mountain village with my classmates. we taught the kids there whocould not afford school. while showing them how broad and how civilized theouter world is, i was deeply touched by their eagerness to learn, their honestyand their purity. i couldn’t control my tears on the day when we left. theprecious experience with the poor kids made me aware of the responsibility onthe shoulders of us, future teachers.

besides study and social practice, there are entertainments as well. i dobody building every day, hoping to keep healthy and energetic. we also write aplay and put it on in our spare

campus life is the most splendid time. but different people have differentchoices. the majority of students cherish their beautiful season and cherish thehope that one day they’ll become outstanding. but there are indeed some studentsstill under ignorance. they gather together for eating, drinking or playingcards. they’re busy in searching for a girlfriend or a boyfriend. they forgetcompletely about their mission as college students and the hope of theirmotherland.

finally, i do hope everybody can try their best to become a worthy citizenof the country. i do hope everybody can become the backbone of our nation andmake great contributions to society!
