1、Compose your essay with a clear purpose 帶着明確的意圖寫文章
一篇議論文旨在讓讀者接受你對於這個話題的看法。以下都是些很好的話題例子：

Whether love is a virtue or a vice.
Why Citizen Kane is the best movie of the 20th century.
Why American citizens should be forced to vote.
2、Write your essay as though you are conducting a debate 寫文章的時候假設你正在參加一場辯論賽
辯論賽裏你需要向聽衆介紹你的主題，擺出論據並且進行總結性說明。議論文和辯論文章的結構是相似的。
3、Collect facts from good sources to justify your opinions 收集一些來源好的事實證明你的觀點。
使用合理的事實來支持你的論證。一篇寫的好的文章是好的，而一篇議論的好的文章是難以否認的。
除了做研究，你還可以通過調查、採訪或者進行實驗來獲取論證。
另外，不要只說一個事實，可以講故事。比如：Since the death penalty has been reinstated, more than 140 inmates on death row have been released after evidence proved them innocent. Ask yourself: How would you like to be one of those 140 wrongfully-convicted inmates.
4、Discuss conflicting opinions 討論正反觀點
除了闡明自己的意見，還可以提出相反的意見，並論證它是不準確的或是過時的。例如：

In other words, people have to write letter in paper and then wait for a long time to make the letter arrived the destination in the old days, but now people can write message on cell phone and then send it to the person they want in a second or just dial that person’s mobile phone number and then they can talk with each other in a few second. Secondly, mobile phone can act as a safe guarantee. When people face dangerous, they can use cell phone to dial 110 to report to the police or ask for help from friends nearby. And when people worry about another man, they can call him to make sure whether he is OK or not. Last but not least, mobile phone contains much interesting entertainment, which can bring lots of happiness to human beings and make their life more colorful.
首先，手機很方便。如果兩個人都有手機那麼他們就可以相互聯繫了。換句話說，以前人們得在紙上寫信，然後等很長的時間才讓這封信到達目的地，但現在人們可以在手機上寫信息，然後在幾秒鐘內把它發送到想要發送的人手上。他們也可以打電話之後就可以相互交流。其次，手機是有安全保證的。當人們面對危險的時候，他們可以用手機撥打110報警或求助於附近的朋友。當人們擔心另一個人的時候，他們可以打電話來確認他是否沒事。最後但並非最不重要的，手機包含了許多有趣的娛樂，可以大家帶來很多的歡樂，讓他們的生活更加豐富多彩。
