一.英語學習的第一層次
把英語看作一個語言知識體系(knowledge)來加以研讀、理解和記憶，從而準確掌握大量關於英語語言的知識，這是英語學習的第一層次，也是英語學習的最低層次，是其他層次的基礎。在這個層次上，英語被分解爲語音、詞彙、語法、語篇四大知識體系。語言學家通過深入研究，對英語這四方面進行認真、細緻地描述，從而總結出一條又一條語言規則。英語學習的第一層次就是通過大腦的認知活動和複用練習，理解和記憶這些語言知識和規則。
(1)語音知識:包括音素的發音、音標、音的組合、音在組合過程中發生的各種變體(如同化、濁化、連讀、失去爆破等)，音和字母(字母組合)的關係，基本語調、語調的表義功能、停頓、節奏、韻律等知識。
(2)詞彙知識:包括拼寫、發音、詞性、詞義(本義、引申、轉義等)、搭配(語義搭配和形式搭配)、文體色彩(如書面語、口語、俚語、專業用語、古語、描述、評價等)知識。
(3)語法知識:包括詞法和句法兩大部分。詞法知識包括詞的分類和構詞法。詞的分類重點抓住名詞和動詞的性質特徵和語法功能。名詞講究數、性、格，相關知識有限定詞、代詞、形容詞和介詞;動詞講究時、體、態、氣、不定式、現在分詞、過去分詞，相關知識有助動詞、及物、不及物、副詞等概念。句法知識包括句子類型、句子成分、主句、從句、引語、一致、倒裝、省略等知識。
(4)語篇知識:它包括篇章結構、前後照應、連貫與銜接、修辭手段、鋪陳與突顯以及文體等知識
