Many people today prefer socializing online to spending time with friends in local community. Do advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

As teenagers still seem to make up a huge percentage of social networkers, millions of adults and seniors today are becoming active on social networking sites. In general, I think this trend have exerted desirable impacts on people and society as a whole.

On social media sites, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Linkedln etc., users may develop biographical profiles, communicate with friends and strangers, do research, and share thoughts, photos, music, links, and more. Compared with the traditional way of communicating with people face-to-face, they provide rich opportunities for making new friends, especially when someone is looking forward to building up and maintaining connection with others with common interests both personally and professionally. Also, nowadays millions of people of all ages have tried the Internet dating services as a way to possibly find a lifelong partner. Therefore, experience suggests that socializing online is a great way to get acquainted with people that we would never have met otherwise.

More importantly, socializing online empowers individuals to make social change and do social good on a community even national level. People today have easier access to unveiling social problems and they have become more connected to the society by exchanging opinions with others who share the same concerns in life. This trend increases people's participation in social events, which encourages the government to address issues in various fields.

However, online socializing, just like it's offline counterpart, can present some danger and it is important that people understand the safety and privacy protection of any service they choose to use.

In conclusion, I believe that socializing online is helping instead of hindering the life of us.

“Some people think that social networking sites have a huge negative impact on both individual and society. To what extent do you agree or disagree?”

However, those benefits are accompanied by a lot of potential negative influence. For one thing, individuals tend to be addicted to the Internet. Therefore, time and energy supposed to be spent in studying and working is wasted in renewing and browsing websites. For another, the issue of web security has already been a great concern for the whole society. For example, some people, especially teenagers and elder people, fail to realize that not only our friends but also strangers have access to the personal information in the social websites. They post their real names, photos or family addresses on their public homepages and allow them to be viewed by others. Consequently, the rate of Internet fraud gradually rises sincecriminals will make use of the leaked personal information for illegal purposes.

(2)accompany

(3)potential

(4)be addicted to 沉迷於......

(5)have access to 可以使用,可以進入

(6)criminal

Many people believe that social networking sites( such as Facebook) have had a huge negative impact on both individuals and society.

To what extent do you agree?

Social networking sites, for instance Facebook, are thought by some to have had a detrimental effect on individual people as well as society and local communities. However, in my opinion ,while I believe that such sites are mainly beneficial to the individual, I agree that they have had a damaging effect on local communities.

With regards to individuals, the impact that online social media has had on each individual person has clear advantages. Firstly people from different countries are brought together through such sites as Facebook whereas before the development of technology and social networking sites, people rarely had the chance to meet or communicate with anyone outside of their immediate circle or community. Secondly, Facebook also has social groups which offer individuals a chance to meet and participate in discussions with people who share common interests.

On the other hand, the effect that Facebook and other social networking sites have had on societies and local communities can only be seen as negative . Rather than individual people taking past in their local community, they are instead choosing to take more interest in people online. Consequently, the people within local communities are no longer forming close or supportive relationships. Furthermore, society as a whole is becoming increasingly disjointed and fragmented as people spend more time online with people they have never met face to face and who they are unlikely to ever meet in the future.

To conclude although social networking sites have brought individuals closer together, they have not had the same effect on society or local communities. Local communities should do more to try and involve local people in local activities in order to promote the future of community life.
