【場景再現】
Monica，Rachel和Phoebe邊拆Rachel求職信的回函邊討論前一天晚上Ross說打牌時會六親不認的事情。
Rachel: (opening mail) Can you.believe what a jerk Ross was being?
Monica: Yeah, I know. He can get really competitive.
Phoebe: Ha. Ha, ha.
Monica: What?
Phoebe: Oh, hello, kettle? This is Monica. You're black.
Monica: Please! I am not as bad as Ross.
Rachel: Oh, I beg to differ. The Pictionary incident?
Monica: That was not an incident! I-I was gesturing, a-and the plate slipped out of my hand.
Rachel: Oooooh. (reads letter) (surprised): Oh! I got an interview! I got an interview!
Monica: You're kidding! Where? Where?
Rachel: (in disbelief): Sak's... Fifth... Avenue.
Monica: Oh, Rachel!
Phoebe: Oh, it's like the mother ship is calling you home.
Monica: Well, what's the job?
Rachel: Assistant buyer. Oh! I would be shopping... for a living!
【講解】
1. hello, kettle? This is Monica. You're black.
這個句子簡單的說就是五十步笑百步，彼此彼此。古人說，"It's like the pot calling the kettle black."“罐子笑壺黑，因爲很多鐵製炊具爲黑色。意思是，你在嘲諷別人時，其實自己也一樣，就好像說，"It takes one to know one"。
2. beg to differ
這是一種非常禮貌的表達不同意的方式。美國人在別人發表觀點的時候，有一個很好的習慣就是傾聽，而在表示自己不同意的時候也會很禮貌的表達出來，所以像是"I don't agree with you."或 "I totally disagree." 這樣的話是很少會出現的，而這又是我們經常用的。那怎麼樣表達才更好些呢？"I beg to differ."或是 "You must be joking."都是可以的。
