Recently, my teenage son give me a great insight into my writing career. He plays the online multiplayer game Minecraft, in which players build vast structures while battling the occational zombie at night.

“How do you win the game?” I asked him.

He rolled his eyes, the way only teens can.

“ There is no winning the game, mom.” He said. “ It’s about the experience. It’s all about the journey.”

Well said, Evan. I so often forget this truth.

In writing, there is no arriving. There’s always the drive to write a better article, blog post, poem, or novel, next time. There is no “done”.

What sights do you want to see on your journey? Where do you want to be sure to go?” These are the questions I’m asking myself as I consider my plans for next year.

If we’ve written well, what we leave behind will be part of the things for our younger generations, hopefully helping others long after we’re gone. I find that thought comforting.

You could make your way to new signatures in magazines, or even to new places on the map. I have a friend who was flown to Denmark to meet with Lego because they liked his writing. I recently read about a woman whose writing got her a position in Singapore from Coca-Cola.

So here’s to a writing journey for all of us that’s full of splendid sights, unexpected turns, wonderful friends, and opportunities to grow.

As we enter the new year, I’m going to try to remember my writing-career focus — the places I want to be sure to visit on my way. Most of all, I’m going to work on setting free my feelings of “falling behind” or not being “there” yet, and try to enjoy every moment of my wonderful writer’s life.

28. What made the author reflect on her writing career?

A. Her son’s playing games online.

C. Her experience of a journey. B. Her son’s winning the game. D. Her son’s words. B. Education. C. Politics. D. Science.

29. The author mentioned Lego and Coca-Cola to show that ______.

A. great writers can make a difference

B. there are excellent writers in well-known companies

C. writers should go to new places on the map

D. big companies attract all writers

30. What is the author’s most important plan for next year?

A. Not to fall behind others.

B. To remember her writing-career focus.

C. To visit some places to promote her writing.

D. To treasure every moment in the course of writing.

31. What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. My Smart Son

B. The Writing Journey Matters

C My Writing Career

D. My Son Teaches Me Much

As a star computer scientist, Cristina Fonseca had lots of job offers, but she turned them all down. She decided to start her own business Talkdesk. She lives in Portugal but does business all over the globe by using software.

The global economy works well for such people.

But the world of work has been less kind to other young folks. Florence Moreau, a young architect in Paris, had the double misfortune to leave university seven years ago, when the world economy was on its knees; and to be French. “I really need a full-time, permanent job,” she says. Under France’s 3,800-page labour law, workers on permanent contracts (合同) receive generous benefits and are extremely hard to get rid of. So French firms have all but stopped hiring permanent staff: four-fifths of new employees are on short-term contracts. Ms Moreau has had eight jobs, none lasting for longer than 16 months. With a small child at home, she has to keep looking for the next one. “It’s tiring,” she sighs.

Joblessness matters. The longer people are out of work, the more their ability and their they are to give up.

Trade unions often favour a minimum wage. This can help those who already have jobs, but if it is set too high it can crowd out those with the fewest skills and the least experience, who tend to be young.

A labour system where companies can hire and fire easily is urgently needed.

Making it easier for young people to start their own business is essential, too. They may be full of energy and open to new ideas.

Alas, there is a huge mismatch everywhere between the skills that many young people can offer and the ones that employers need. Ms Fonseca says she cannot find the right talent for Talkdesk. As economies grow more complex, demand for practical skills will keep rising. The world’s schools are not even close to meeting it.

32. What can we learn about Cristina Fonseca?

A. She does business only in Portugal.

B. She can’t find the talents she wants.

C. Her company is not related to information technology.

D. When seeking a job, she was refused many times by employers.

33. What does the underlined word “atrophy” in paragraph 4 mean?

A. Shrink. B. Increase.

C. Overcome. D. Survive.

34. Why can’t Moreau find a permanent job?

A. The world economy is booming.

B. She didn’t finish university studies.

C. Employers don’t want to give workers good welfare.

D. The French government hasn’t taken any measures for unemployment.

35. Which measure is actually useless for unemployment?

A. Raising the minimum wage.

B. Training students to gain skills.

C. Making labour rules more flexible.

D. Encouraging young people to start companies.

How to Be a Pleasant Person

Each of us would love to be appreciated for the positive emotions that are exhibited around our surroundings. 36 The following steps will help you to be a pleasant person.

Be modest. Understand that we all are humans. You might be rich or poor, black or white, short or tall etc. But above all we are all humans, which means we are all emotional beings. So treat others the way you would like to be treated.

37 Be it offering a seat to an elderly person or throwing the football back to the young child, the inner self-satisfaction you get by doing so is priceless. Once you do so, you will feel good about yourself.

Don’t regret. We all are reasonable beings and it is very human to do unreasonable things at times. However, it does not mean that we should regret what we did in the past. Every experience is a learning which teaches you what to do and what not to do in future. 38

Forgive and forget. Always living in the past will only make one painful on the inside, which will reflect on the outside. 39 By doing so, your heart becomes light.

Be grateful. Thank God and the Universe for yourself, your parents, your friends, your clothes, jobs, food, home etc. and every small thing that makes a difference. 40 It will make you appreciate life.

A. Encourage others and yourself.

B. Lend a helping hand with a smile.
