第三部分 閱讀理解(共20小題; 每小題2分, 滿分40分)

A

Boys need friends, suffer when they don’t believe they have any, and worry over the ups and downs of relationships. Many adults believe that somehow boys need friends less than girls do, in truth, though, no boy is an island; boys value their friends throughout childhood and adolescence and are happier and healthier when they have solid relationships with peers.

Despite the common belief that girls are better at relationships, most boys consider their friends a very important part of their lives, and boys may actually be better at keeping friendships than girls are. A recent study of 10-to-15-year-old boys and girls found that girls’ friendships are actually more fragile. Girls tend to say and do hurtful things to each other more frequently than boys, and girls are more hurt by the end of a friendship.

Boys are the living definition of the phrase “peer group”; they love games with rules, competition, and doing things together. Boys seem to enjoy, even need the opportunity to test themselves against others, and many lasting friendships begin in karate(空手道)class or on the basketball court. Competence and skill are widely respected; being picked last for a team or left out altogether is an experience that can haunt(縈繞心頭)a boy for years.

As boys mature, the friendship becomes even more important, and it frequently widens to include girls. During the teen years, friends can become the most important part of a boy’s life—and a part in which his parents are not included. The confusion of being a teenager leads boys to form close bonds with friends. There is the sense for many boys that a friend is someone who is “always there for me”, someone they can trust. They may be partners in crime or partners in study, but the friendship of adolescent boys can run surprisingly deep.

54. As a boy gets older, he tends to .

A. widen his circle of friends to include his parents

LONDON(Reuters)—New faces given to a Chinese man after a bear tore off part of his face and a French-Caribbean man disfigured by a rare tumor show that such transplants can work and are not medical oddities(怪異), researchers said.

The findings give hope to some people with severe facial disfigurement and suggest the transplants could prove long-lasting without major problems. Despite the tissue rejection in the first year after their transplants, neither men had psychological problems accepting their new faces and have been able to rejoin society, they reported.

Only three people have received face transplants. The world’s first was carried out on a French woman Isabelle Dinoire in November 2005 after she was disfigured in an attack by her dog. In 2007, her doctors reported that she had recovered slowly and steadily, overcoming two periods of rejection.

In 2006, Chinese doctors performed a face transplant on a 30-year-old hit by a bear. While there were some complications with tissue rejection following the operation, two years later the man was doing well, his doctors said. “This case suggests that facial transplantation might be an option for restoring a severely disfigured face, and could enable patients to bring themselves back into society, ” Guo Shuzhong and colleagues at Xijing Hospital in China wrote.

A French team described their work on a 29-year-old man who suffered from Von Recklinghausen disease, an illness that changes the shape of his face. “The man, who was not named, was given a new nose, mouth and chin in a 2007 operation. He began to work 13 months after the transplant has more functions in his face and has not rejected the new tissue, ”his doctors said.

“Our case confirms that face transplantation is practical and effective for the correction of specific disfigurement, ”Dr. Laurent Lantieri and colleagues at the Henri-Mondor Hospital outside Paris wrote.

Facebook is now used by 30 million people in the UK, around half the population. Joanna Shields, vice president of Facebook Europe, made the a nnouncement this morning at a media conference in London.

Globally, Facebook has more than 500 million registered(註冊的)users, a milestone it hit last summer. Last July, it had 26 million registered UK users. In the last eight months, it has attracted 4 million extra UK users, bringing the UK total to 30 million.

Facebook, the brainchild of Mark Zuckerberg while he was still studying at Harvard University, was launched in February 2004. The pace of its global growth has sped rapidly—Facebook had only 150 million registered users in January 2009.

One third of women aged 18 to 34 check Facebook when they first wake up, before even going to the toilet, according to the research. 21% check Facebook in the middle of the night, while 42% of the same group think it is fine to post drunken photos of themselves onto the social network, a study by Oxygen Media and Lightspeed Research found.

Shields was speaking this morning at the Financial Times Digital Media and Broadcasting Conference about the power Facebook’s referrals(好友推薦)can bring to media sites, such as newspapers and TV services. She explained that the average Facebook user has 130 friends who they share links to media sites with regularly. “Media companies which take advantage of that are really seeing the benefits, ”Shields said. Shields refused to be drawn on whether Facebook would develop its own mobile phone operating system and also said it was “silly” that Google had recently disabled the feature which allowed Google users to refresh their contacts with Facebook friends.

59. Eight months ago the number of registered users of Facebook in the UK was about .

A. less than half of its population

B. 30 million

C. 4 million

Clenching(攥)your fist could be enough to help you improve your memory. Research suggests that balling up the right hand and squeezing(緊握)it tightly actually makes it easier to memorize lists. Later, when it is time to retrieve the information, it is the left hand that should be clenched. It is thought the movements activate(激活)brain regions’ key to the storing and recall of memories. The American researchers suggest those who are short of a pen and paper should try the trick when attempting to memorize a shopping list or phone number.

In the study, volunteers were given a rubber ball and asked to squeeze it as hard as possible before trying to memorize a list of 72 words. They squeezed the ball again a couple of minutes later, ahead of recollecting as many of the words as possible.

One group used their right hand on both occasions, another their left. A third group clenched their right fist ahead of memorizing and their left ahead of recalling and a fourth did the reverse(相反). A fifth group held the ball but did not squeeze it. Those who squeezed with their right hand, followed by their left, remembered the most words. The next best were the volunteers who made a fist with their right hand both times, while those who didn’t squeeze at all did better than those who led with their left.

It is thought that the movement of clenching the right fist activates a brain region that is involved in storing memories, while squeezing the left hand activates an area that is key to retrieving information. Lead researcher Dr Ruth Propper said, “The findings suggest that simple body movements—by temporarily(臨時)changing the way the brain functions—can improve memory. ”

63. The passage is mainly about .

A. the way to help improve the memory

B. how to memorize the words

C. how to memorize a shopping list

D. how to memorize a group of words with a ball in hand

Johnny Jones was a nice and popular boy, who everyone loved. He was so much fun, so good and so kind to everyone that they treated him wonderfully. But as everything h e needed was given to him without asking, Johnny became a weed. He was so spoiled by everyone that he couldn’t stand any hardship.

One day Johnny heard a mother saying to her son “Come on, my boy, get up and stop crying. You are behaving like Johnny Jones. ”That made Johnny feel very ashamed. But he was sure that he would prefer to be known as a good boy rather than a fool. Worried, he spoke to his father about all this, though he was afraid that maybe he would be laughed at for having such worries. His father, far from laughing at Johnny, told him that a teacher had taught him a secret trick to turn him into the toughest boy of all. “Eat a candy less, study a minute more, and count to five before crying. ”Johnny asked, “Just that? ”“Yes, just that, ”said his father, “It’s very simple, but I warn you that it won’t be easy. ”

Johnny was happy like a bird, ready to follow the advice. He went to see his mother, and she noticed how happy he was when she offered him candies. “One candy less”, thought Johnny, so he only took one. That afternoon he had another chance to put it into practice by studying one minute more. The result was that he missed the first minute of his favorite program! But having achieved this gave him a great feeling of satisfaction. The same thing happened when he ran up against the corner of the kitchen table. He only managed to count to four before crying, but that was left deeply in his mother’s memory.

Over the following days Johnny kept using the motto in his life as his father told him. And the more he put this into practice, the easier it got. Before long he realized that he could also do things that w ould seem impossible before.

Text 10

What kind of environment do you want in the future? What can you do to help make it come true? What can other people do?

Education is one way to help the environment. You can learn about the environment in school. Radio and TV can give you information. Newspapers, magazines, and books also help you learn.

Laws can also help the environment. There are laws against littering and making the air and water dirty. Other laws help people to save resources. The law lowering the speed of cars helps to save fuel. But people don’t have to wait for laws to be passed. They can do things on their own. Another way to help the environment is to plan for the future. We may have to find new resources. In the future, people may heat their homes with atomic power. Maybe they will make full use of the energy from the sun.

短文寫作

【參考範文】

Interest is a kind of power that can drive people to learn actively and happily. And it also makes learning more effective and efficient. In other words, interest is the best teacher for a leaner.

I really appreciate the opinion. I began to be crazy about English when I was little. And I got interested in foreign cultures and customs in particular. To meet my curiousity, I read English stories, listened to English songs or watched English films every day, all of which even seemed to be the best “meal” of my daily life. As a result, I always did well in English exams.

In a word, interest is the key to success. Anyone who is interested in something will devote himself to it. Surely, a big miracle will be made.
