People often wonder why historians go to so muchtrouble to preserve millions of books, documentsand records.

Why do we have libraries? What good are thesedocuments and history books? Why do we record andsave the actions of men, the negotiations ofgovernment officials and the events during wars?

We do it because, sometimes, the voice of experience can cause us to stop, look and times, past records, when understood in the right way, can help us decide what to do andwhat not to do. If we are ever to create lasting peace, we must seek its origins in humanexperience and in the records of human history.

From the stories of courage and devotion of men and women, we create the inspirations ofyouth. History records the suffering, the self-denial, the devotion, and the heroic deeds ofpeople in the past. These records can help us when we are confused and when we really needpeace.

The main purpose of history is to create a better world. History gives a warning to those whopromote war,and inspiration to those who seek peace.

In short, history helps us learn. Yesterday’s records can keep us from repeating yesterday’smistakes. And from the pieces of mosaic assembled by historians come the great murals whichrepresent the progress ofmankind.

In a calm sea every man is a pilot.

But all sunshine without shade, all pleasure withoutpain, is not life at the lot of the happiest ,itis a tangled avements and blessings, onefollowing another, make us sad and blessed by death itself makes life more loving. Men comeclosest to their true selves in the sober moments oflife, under the shadows of sorrow and loss.

In the affairs of life or of business, it is not intellect that tells so much as character, not brainsso much as heart, not genius so much as self-control, patience, and discipline, regulatedby judgment.

I have always believed that the man who has begun to live more seriously within begins to livemore simplywithout. In an age of extravagance and waste, I wish I could show to the worldhow few the real wants of humanity are.

To regret one's errors to the point of not repeating them is true e is nothingnoble in being superior to some other man. The true nobility is in being superior to yourprevious self.
