在英語裏，我們經常會碰到only這個詞。它一般作副詞或形容詞用，作“僅僅”或“唯一”解。值得注意的是，它在句中往往可以放在不同的位置，句子的涵義隨着only位置的變化而變化。
第一句的意思是“只有老陳的兒子批評他”；第二句是“老陳的獨子批評他”；第三句是“老陳的兒子只不過批評他”（言外之意是並沒有打他或罵他”）；第四句的意思是“老陳的兒子只批評他一個人”（並沒有批評其他人）。
第四句亦可寫作Chen's son criticized only him．把only 調至him之前，意思不變。第一、三句的only是副詞；第二、四句的only是形容詞。
從上列例句可以看出，更換某些詞在句中的位置往往會使句子產生不同的意義。初學英語者對類似的句子應加以注意，以免誤解原意。下面再舉數例，以見一斑：
