今天,我们就来讲一讲这个老生常谈的职场话题。
A glass ceiling is a metaphor used to represent an invisible barrier that keeps a given demographic (typically applied to minorities) from rising beyond a certain level in a hierarchy.
玻璃天花板是指在公司、企业和机关、团体中对某些群体(如女性、少数族裔)晋升到高级职位或决策层的潜在限制或障碍。
比如,美国虽然很发达,但还没有女性能成为该国总统。
所以,2016年希拉里竞选的时候,就说美国女性在政坛就遭受 glass ceiling effect 的影响,并呼吁女性要努力打破这一障碍。
所以,所谓的玻璃天花板效应,是指有些障碍如玻璃一样,虽然不会明文规定,但却是实实在在的存在,以至于在职场中某些人群被无形限制。
另外,与此相似的,还有玻璃地板(glass floor)一词。
它是指某些群体在地位降低过程中的障碍。
比如因为对女性的刻板印象,在减少她们相对男性升任公司总裁及高阶主管机会的同时,也减少了她们失业、过度劳动、落入地位低下的矿工、囚犯等处境的几率。
