Foreign children living in Chinese mainlanddemonstrate better performance than the worldaverage in multiple areas including openness tonew experiences, multilingual communication andsocial group expansion, according to aninternational expat survey issued on May 23 byHSBC.

The survey, conducted over nine years, is theworld's largest sustained investigation of its kind, inviting interviewees to share theirexperiences living overseas.

It covered more than 26,000 expatriates from countries and regions including Chinesemainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, France, the U.K., the U.S., Australia, India and Indonesia.

The survey showed that about 80 percent of foreign parents in China believe their childrenhave become more open-minded since coming to Chinese mainland, 10 percent higher than theworld average.

Meanwhile, 80 percent of the foreign children living in Chinese mainland can communicate inthe local language, far above the global average of 59 percent.

In addition, nearly 60 percent of foreign parents in China believe their children's social circleshave been expanded by expatriation. Over half of them think their children have become moreconfident, and that their expat lives will benefit their overall development.

The survey also found that living in another country brings challenges for children, alongsidethe advantages.

Nearly 50 percent of foreign parents in Chinese mainland consider adapting to new schools thebiggest challenge for their kids, while homesickness and the language barrier ranked secondand third.

A top Beijing university has introduced a facescanner to keep students staying in one of its all-female dormitories safe.

The face-recognition technology has controlledwho goes in and out of the Beijing Normal Universitydormitory since it was introduced last month.

Before the system was installed, the school recordedimages of all the residents, both with and without their glasses, news portal ported last Monday.

The school said that the system will not only make things easier for students who forget to taketheir student cards with them, which they had previously needed to scan to enter the dorm, but also reduce the workload of staff.

They say if the program is a success, more scanners will be installed around the campus.

A student surnamed Zhao told that residents have to say their name, input theirstudent number or swipe their student card before the machine scans their faces.

"It is convenient and it gives me a sense of security because strangers can no longer get inand out of the building," Zhao said, adding that she prefers to input her student number as shefinds it "awkward" to speak to a machine.
