The Craze of Pursuing Graduate Studies

The Craze of Pursuing Graduate Studies

Each year, millions of Chinese college students sit for

qualifying examinations for graduate studies, primarily in Master’s programs. Students prepare for those examinations either through years of arduous self-education or by spending large sums of money attending local training schools. The publishing of examinations-related study materials and the training programs offered, both online and offline, have combined to form a sizable industry.

An alarming fact about this craze is that most students pursue graduate studies not out of their voluntary will. Faced with the harsh reality in the employment market, which is forever looking for graduates with higher degrees, many college graduates find going to graduate schools is a good way to avoid unemployment and to enhance one’s competitiveness in future job hunting.

However, without that voluntary initiative, most students who do enter graduate schools are not motivated. For them, the only thing that ultimately counts is the degree or the diploma which they expect could give them an upper hand against other job hunters. As to the actual substance of their graduate studies, it’s not a big deal for them, as long as it leads

to that degree or diploma. It is really pathetic to see that students undertake graduate studies with an ulterior motive—not for the sake of loving what they study, but for the sake of merely landing a job, which in many cases might be unrelated to what they have studied.

The chill truth is that students soon find their anticipations are a mere dream. As so many undergraduates proceed onto graduate studies, the employment situation remains as severe as ever. Instead of bringing about apparent competitive edges, two or three years of additional academic training is simply a waste of time and energy. They need to reflect on this craze and would have been better off distinguishing themselves with outstanding knowledge and skills when they were undergraduates.

Due Attention Should Be Given to Speaking

Nowadays fewer and fewer students pay attention to their spoken English, which results in a dramatic increase in the number of students who can spell English words but are incapable of speaking them fluently or correctly. This phenomenon has aroused many people’s attention.

Why does such a phenomenon emerge? As far as I’m concerned, there are possibly two reasons contributing to this

phenomenon. On the one hand, exam-oriented education makes many schools lay emphasis on passing the English exams, which leads to the lack of speaking environment for students to practice their spoken English. On the other hand, students themselves don’t realize the importance of the ability to speak English which has a great influence on their future

study and career development.

To change this situation, I think, we can take the following measures. First, the importance of oral English should be emphasized to raise students’ awareness of the necessity of speaking English. Second, exams should be modified to make students pay attention to their spoken English. Third, schools can organize various activities to arouse students’ interest in speaking English.

禮儀教育

題目要求:

How to Enhance Etiquette Education?

1. 禮儀教育很重要 現在許多大學生都不懂禮儀 爲加強禮儀教育,家長和學校應該……

參考範文:

How to Enhance Etiquette Education?

Etiquette education, which plays an important role in moral education, has caught more and more people’s attention. Because it is an integral part of quality-oriented education and contributes to the construction of a harmonious society. However, due to the lack of etiquette education in schools and families as well as the bad influence of the social environment, many college students have little knowledge of etiquette, thus it is quite common to see their bad behaviors. For example, they have no respect for their professors and the old, they talk to each other loudly in the library and don’t care about what they should wear in public places.

Regarding the seriousness of this phenomenon, I think we should take the following measures to arouse university students’ etiquette awareness. First, parents should set a good example for their children at home. Second, colleges should pay attention to students’ etiquette education and open some courses relating to etiquette, and they ought to try their best to create a good campus environment at the same time.

Student Investors ID the Stock Market

China’s stock market is luring students looking to sec how their textbook teachings fare in real life. While there arc no concrete data on the student- investor, business professors say the market boom has boosted the number of students looking to play around with stocks. They invest in the stock market with money from parents and sometimes with amount equal to several times their annual tuition.

Some people are alarmed at the trend. As investing in the stock market involves many risks, they say, college students are very likely to lose, which may put students’ & family assets at risk. However, some are supportive. As more and more students become shareholders, they will help raise tie general quality of shareholders and there will be more rational stock buyers in securities market, which is actually a good thing. In my view, college students may give stock investment a try if possible. Stock investment may be a way to make fast money and help finance students’ schooling. Even if the students are likely to lose in the stock market, it may still bring about valuable investment experience — they can learn if they don’t try.
