The two charts above tell us two facts. First, the annual income of average families in X city increased from $12,000 in 2005 to $16,000 in 2010, an increase of more than 33% in the five years. Second, with the rise in income the percentage of expenditure increased, too. Of the total expense, that spent on housing and food grew from 43% to 54%, which is an increase of 11% over the five years.
以上兩個圖表告訴我們兩個事實。首先，X市的平均家庭年收入從2005年的12,000 美元增加至2010年的16,000美元，在五年內增加33%以上。第二，隨着收入的增加，開銷的比例也增加了。總開銷中，用於住房和食品的花銷從40%增加至54%，在5年內增長了11%。
During the five years, the expenditure on housing grew by 7%, and on food，4%. A possible explanation for the increase is that the greater earnings enabled families to eat better and live better, or simply because the prices on food and housing went up. If it is the former, we can assume that the people may look forward to a better life. But with the latter, they may expect a hard time ahead.
在這五年間，對房屋的開銷增長了7%，食品的開銷增長了4%。這一增長的一個可能解釋就是，更多的收入使得家庭能夠吃得更好，生活得更好，或者乾脆說是因爲食品和住房價格上漲。如果是前者，我們可以假設，人們可能期待一種更美好的生活。但相對於後者，他們可能會預知前面的生活很艱難。
