美國習慣用語 第344期:和"Account"相關的習語(1)
從今天起我們要講由account這個詞發展而來的習慣用語。Account有好多不同的意思，而且既可以作名詞也可以當動詞。我們要學的第一個習慣用語是:bring somebody to account。 Account作名詞的時候可以解釋說明，bring sb. to account意思就是"要求某人說明"，或者"唯某人是問"，帶有要某人負責，或者怪罪批評某人的意思。
有時候我們可以用call這個詞來代替bring somebody to account中的bring，成爲call somebody to account，意義不變。我們來聽個例子，說的是美國情報機構內一件間諜醜聞。
例句-1：Why can't theybringthe responsible officersto accountfor the spy case? Something must be terribly wrong if they let one of their own people spy on them for eight years!
他說：他們爲什麼不追究那批負責官員在那起間諜案中的罪責呢?他們任憑一名內奸刺探他們的祕密情報達八年之久居然渾然不覺。這之間一定有很大失誤!
這裏bring the responsible officers to account意思就是追究負責官員的罪責。我們再聽一個例子。它說的是海外發生的一起惡性事故奪取了許多無辜生命。
例句-2：The opposition parties asked that the new mayorbe called to accountfor the falling of a bridge. They say he paid no attention to a report warning that the bridge might not be safe.
他說：反對黨認爲新市長要爲那起橋樑倒塌事故擔當罪責。他們說他無視一份說橋樑可能不安全的報告。
這裏the new mayor be called to account意思是新市長得擔當罪責。

我們接著學第二個習慣用語:square an account with someone。Square在這裏是動詞。意思是結清。Square an account with someone意思顯然是和某人算清帳目。換句話說是把該償付的錢付清。這個習慣用語常用作比喻意義。我們來聽個例子。他說的是和有線電視公司了結一宗糾紛的事。
例句-3：I'm trying tosquare my account withthe cable TV company. I believe they billed a wrong monthly charge. Instead of $16.75, they want me to pay $33.75 a month for six months.
他說：我正設法解決和有線電視公司的糾紛。我肯定他們收錯了月費，有六個月他們要我每月付三十三美元七毛五，而不是十六美元七毛五。
所以square my account with the cable TV company意思是解決和有線電視公司的糾紛。
我們再聽個例子。人們說美國的特殊現象之一是業務交易效率高。消費者可能對此體會更深。例如跟信用卡公司算清帳目十分簡單便利。
例句-4：It's unbelievable how easy it is tosquare an account witha credit card company in America once you present a receipt. It certainly wouldn't be like that back home!
他說：在美國你只要拿出收據，你和信用卡公司結一筆賬方便得令人難以置信。在我們國家裏可絕不那樣簡單。
這裏square an account with a credit card company意思就是和信用卡公司結清一筆賬。這很可能是發生在用信用卡購物，隨後又退還的情況中。
