straight from the horse's mouth這個俚語最早出現於上世紀20年代，常用來形容“消息絕對可靠”。據說，馬的乳門齒、乳中齒會隨着年歲的增長被永久門齒、永久中齒依次頂落，而且馬的切齒由於採擷食物也會受到磨損，所以，有經驗的馴馬師常“從馬的嘴裏”（from the horse's mouth），即通過馬的乳齒數或馬的切齒磨損程度，來獲知馬的年齡。日常生活中，straight from the horse's mouth更常用來形容“（消息等）直接來自當事人”，表示絕對可靠。tip原指關於賽馬的內部消息，引申爲“內部情報，祕密消息”。
