有些形容詞和定冠詞the連用，表示一類人或事物。常見的形容詞有：young(年輕的)old(年老的)rich(富有的)poor(貧窮的)sick(生病的)healthy(健康的)living(活的)dead(死的)wounded(受傷的)deaf(聾的)blind(失明的)disabled(殘廢的)unemployed(失業的)等，以及其他某些說明人的性格或狀態的形容詞。
這一表達方式具有複數含義，所以動詞也用複數形式：

1. 作主語
