史努比在1950年10月4日第一次在《花生漫畫》中登場，依據漫畫劇情的說法，史努比1950年於10月2日誕生“戴依茲·席爾”狗園（Daisy Hill Puppy Farm，又譯“黛茜山小狗農莊），最初的飼主是名叫萊拉（Lila）的女孩，但由於搬家而將史努比送還戴依茲·席爾狗園。運動萬能，興趣是寫小說。喜歡吃比薩、餅乾及冰激凌，可說是隻人性化的小獵犬。它總是端坐在狗屋的屋頂上，不斷的幻想，變成各式各樣的化身，有時變成律師、棒球選手、酷哥喬(Joe Cool)，有時又變成第一次世界大戰的飛行英雄，有的時候又變成名外科醫師。
雖然會參與許多事情，但基本上還是陶醉在自我的世界裏：化身爲棒球選手時，其實是棒球隊的包袱；化身爲外科醫生時，只是因爲愛上外科醫生做手術時所戴的那頂帽子，一見針筒便怕得要死。除此以外，史努比喜歡扮響尾蛇，因爲它樣子純良，不像是會吃人的危險動物。
他最大的興趣是寫小說，不過他寄給出版社的稿每次都被退回。他老記不住他的主人查理·布朗名字，稱主人是“圓頭小子”（the Round-headed Kid）。他最討厭的是隔壁的貓。還喜歡搶萊納斯（Linus Van Pelt）的毛毯。常和“伍德斯托克”（Woodstock，又譯“胡士託”“糊塗塌客”）及兔子們一起玩。
薄荷·派蒂：（對老師）：爲什麼我知道答案時，你總不叫我回答，我不會答時，你卻偏偏叫我答？
Why do you never call on me when I know the answer, but you always call on me when I don't?
史努比：眼睛會欺騙人，雙腿會累死人，但胃卻專給人找麻煩！

查理·布朗：生活的祕密就是擁有一輛車子和一座湖……如果陽光普照，我就可以開車去兜風，如果天下雨，那也用不着傷心，我可以說“沒關係，雨水會注滿我的糊！”如果湖幹了，我還可以說：“不要緊，這天氣正適合開車兜風…”
