英語短文故事
短文一：
An old man lived alone in Northern Ireland. His only son was in
prison. The old man wanted to plant some potatoes in his garden but he didn't know anyone who would help him plow up the garden.
He wrote to his son about it, and received this reply, "For HEAVENS SAKE, don't dig up that garden, that's where I buried the GUNS!"
At 4 AM the next morning, a dozen British soldiers showed up and dug up the entire garden, but didn't find any guns.
Confused, the man wrote to his son telling him what happened and asking him what to do next.
His son's reply was: "Just plant your potatoes."
短文二:
One day a little girl came home from school, and said to her mother, "Mommy, today in school I was punished for something that I didn't do."
The mother exclaimed, "But that's terrible! I'm going to have a talk with your teacher about this! By the way, what was it that you didn't do?"
The little girl replied, "My homework."
短文三：
While proudly showing off his new apartment to friends, a college student led the way into the den(私室，賊窩) . What is the big brass gong(鑼) and hammer for? one of his friends asked. That is the talking clock, the man replied. How's it work?
Watch, the man said and proceeded to give the gong an ear shattering pound with the hammer. Suddenly, someone screamed from the other side of the wall, Knock it off, you idiot! It's two o'clock in the morning!
短文四：
On her return from school，little Dolly，aged ten，was pulled on to her Daddy's knee，and informed that the fairies had that day brought a big surprise a little baby see med glad，and presently said：
“Will you give me a stamp，daddy?I want to write and tell brother Tom.”
The father was touched by this，and provided the little lass with the materials to write a letter to her brother，who was away at r，curious to know how she would tell the news，he took an opportunity to read what she had received something of a shock on reading the following：
“Dear Tom， It's come off 've lost;it's a boy.”

Pat had seen babies in other people's houses and had not liked them very much，so he was not delighted about the news that there was soon going to be one in his house too.
One evening or were making plans for the baby's arrival.“This house won't be big enough for us all when the baby comes，”said or.
Pat came into the room just then and said，“What are you talking about?”“We were saying that we'll have to move to an other house now，because the new baby's coming，”his mother answered.
“ It's no use，”said Pat hopelessly.“ He'll follow us there.”

媽媽激動地說：“那真是太可怕了!我要跟你的老師好好談一談，對了，你沒有做過的那件事是什麼?”
小女孩回答說：“我的家庭作業。”
短文三翻譯：
一個學生帶他朋友們參觀他的新公寓，甚是得意。那個大銅鑼和錘子是幹什麼用的?他的一個朋友問他。那玩意兒厲害了，那是一個會說話的鐘，學生回答。這鐘怎麼工作的，他的朋友問。看着，別眨眼了，那學生走上前一把操起銅鑼和錘子，拼命地敲了一下，聲音震耳欲聾。突然，他們聽到隔壁牆那邊有人狂叫，別敲了，你這白癡!現在是凌晨兩點鐘了!。”
短文四翻譯：
放學回到家裏，十歲的小多莉被拉過來坐在她爸爸的膝上，她被告知那天仙女們帶來了一個大大的驚奇——一個嬰兒小弟弟。她似乎很高興，馬上說：
“爸爸，你能不能給我一張郵票?我要寫信告訴湯姆哥哥。”
父親被這話感動了，他爲小姑娘提供了給她哥哥寫信所需的各種用具，她的哥哥住在學校裏。後來，想知道她是怎麼報告這個消息的，他找機會讀了她寫的信。在讀到下面這兩行字時，他差點兒驚呆了：
“親愛的湯姆：今天結果出來了，你輸了;是個男孩。”

泰勒夫婦有一個七歲的男孩，名叫帕特。現在泰勒太太正懷着第二胎。
帕特在別人家看見過嬰兒，他不太喜歡他們，所以他對自己家裏也將有一個嬰兒的消息感到不滿。
一天晚上，泰勒夫婦正在爲這個嬰兒的降生計劃做安排。泰勒先生說：“有了嬰兒，我們的房子就太小，不夠住了。”
帕特恰好在這個時候走進屋，他問：“你們在說什麼?”他的母親回答說：“我們在說我們現在得搬家，因爲嬰兒就要誕生了。”
“那沒用，”帕特絕望地說。“他會跟我們到那兒去的。”
