農民對雲的變幻相當注意，因爲那和晴雨有關。
英語諺語有: Red clouds in the east, rain the next day。是英國農民看雲測晴雨的經驗之談。
鄉諺有“日沒火燒雲，明天曬死人”的說法，說黃昏時西方的紅雲，是次日天氣炎熱之兆。
雲和天氣的密切關係，在諺語中常用以比喻人生遭遇，如:After clouds, calm weather一語，來自：After a storm comes a calm weather，亦作After black clouds comes clear weather, 正是我們說的“雨過天晴”，比喻情況由壞轉好。
不過，西方諺語中另有一句：All clouds bring no storms（亦作no rains），即使烏雲密佈，未必一定下雨。此諺語常用以提醒我們世事發展未必定如預見。形勢欠佳，未必一定十分不利。
例如老闆對夥計發脾氣，有人安慰夥計道：
Don't worry. all clouds bring no storms！老闆發怒，不會炒魷魚的！
