英國騷亂的製造者的各種稱呼
英國剛發生騷亂的時候，BBC在報道中用protesters這個詞來稱呼暴動者，據推測是因爲上週六最初發生在托特納姆的騷亂是（或者說看起來是）一次抗議活動，抗議警察對馬克·杜乾死亡事件的冷漠反應。但這個稱呼引發了社會民衆的批評潮。
大多數人強烈反對使用“抗議者”這個詞，有人認爲使用惡棍（thugs）、流氓（hooligans）等詞更合適，政治家們則傾向於使用“罪犯（criminal）”一詞。在談論他們的時候，《每日郵報》使用的是“無政府主義者”（anarchists）；《太陽報》用的是“傻子”（morons）、“惡棍”（thugs）和“白癡”（idiots）。我們來看幾個例子吧！
1. Why do the press keep calling the rioters here protesters? They're not protesting about or for anything.
爲什麼媒體一直在稱這裏的暴徒爲抗議者呢？他們並沒有在抗議什麼。
2. A brazen thug is caught on camera torching a Miss Selfridge store and causing a High Street inferno.
監控錄像拍到了一個無恥的惡棍點燃塞爾弗裏奇專賣店、引發商業街大火的畫面。
3. Leicester's riot copycat cretins not only damaged business premises but torched an Age Concern ambulance and looted a budget store.
萊斯特郡暴動中的傻冒跟風者們不僅毀壞了寫字樓，而且燒掉了“關注長者”慈善機構的一個救護車，並搶劫了一個平價商店。
4. Mindless yobs simply destroyed more than 100 years of history and trashed countless other small family businesses in this area for no good reason whatsoever.
那些沒腦子的小無賴們毀了一個有100多年曆史的古建築，並無緣無故地破壞了本地區無數的小家族生意。
5. Sun readers are urged to name and shame any morons they saw looting or committing arson and wrecking property.

6. "Looters are scum" was the verdict emblazoned on the T-shirt of a woman helping with the clean-up in London.
倫敦一名幫助清理現場的婦女T恤上寫着”搶劫者都是人渣”。
7. There are pockets of our society that are not just broken but frankly sick.
他們是我們社會中的一羣瘋子，他們的腦子顯然有病。
本週的動亂也催生了其它詞彙的新鮮用法。例如，“the feds（聯邦調查局）”本來是從美國犯罪類型電視劇引入的詞，而現在成了直接指向警察的首選詞彙，至少在倫敦的許多地方都是如此。英語中指代警察的俚語還有old bill一詞。
The feds are following me.
警察在追蹤我。
其它城市俚語也突然贏得了廣泛的用戶，包括“bare” 這個詞，意思是“大量的”（a lot of）。例如：
Bare feds in Wood Green. Men are running about everywhere!
大量警察聚集在綠林區，人們到處瘋跑!
再如“Mandem”最初是加勒比海地區的俚語，現在已經變成倫敦的常用語，意思是“朋友”。
The riots have begun ... mandem pullin out bats, and pit bulls everywere. Join in!
騷亂開始了……朋友們都出來狂歡，到處都是瘋狗，一起來吧！
