stop at nothing: to be willing to do anything to get what you want, even if it is dishonest or wrong 不擇手段,毫無顧忌
He'd stop at nothing to make a success out of his business.
爲了生意成功他會不擇手段.
stop short of something/of doing something: 突然停住,差一點兒沒做某事;險些做出某事 nearly but not actually do sth, for example because you are afraid or you think it is a bad idea
She stopped short of calling the president a liar.
她差一點兒沒指責校長說謊.
The manager told her that he was unhappy with her work, but he stopped short of dismissing her from her job.
經理告訴她,他對她的工作不滿意,可是他尚沒有解僱她.
