西湖大學正式獲教育部批准設立

The Ministry of Education has given the go-ahead to Westlake University, China's first private research university.

教育部近日批准設立我國第一所私立研究型大學西湖大學。

The non-profit research institute and university will be dedicated to the advancement of natural sciences and frontier engineering disciplines under the administration of Jiangsu Province.

這家非盈利性的研究機構兼大學，將在江蘇省的管理下，致力於推進自然科學和前沿工程學科的發展。

Westlake University will be a new type of research-oriented university, with emphasis on basic and advanced scientific and technological research.

作爲一所新型研究型大學，西湖大學將主要開展基礎性、前沿科學技術研究。

The ministry said the university will start by offering postgraduate education to a maximum of 5,000 full-time students, with an undergraduate program to be launched when the time is right.

教育部表示，該校將從爲至多5000名全日制學生提供研究生教育起步，並適時開展本科生教育。

The current Westlake Institute for Advanced Study is the predecessor of Westlake University, of which Shi Yigong, a famed biophysicist and former vice-president of Tsinghua University, is expected to be first president.

目前的西湖高等研究學院是西湖大學的前身，著名的生物物理學家、清華大學前副校長施一公有望成爲西湖大學首任校長。

Westlake University will include 12 disciplines at first-class level -- biology, biomedical engineering, pharmaceutical science, physics, mathematics, chemistry, basic medical sciences, computer science and technology, electronic science, optical engineering, material sciences and mechanical engineering.

西湖大學將包括12個一級學科，分別是：生物學、生物醫學工程、藥學、物理學、數學、化學、基礎醫學、計算機科學與技術、電子科學與技術、光學工程、材料科學和機械工程。
