A Brahmin, a member of the Hindu priest, had a great reputation for holiness, and receivedmany presents so that he became rich.

一位婆羅門，印度僧侶之一，在聖潔方面享有極高的威望， 所以他收到了很多禮物，也因此變得很富有。

One day, he took a fancy to dress himself as a poor peasant.

一天，他突-然把自 己打扮成了一位貧窮的農民。

In this attire, he went into the market place but no one saluted him and no one gave him anypresents.

他穿着這身衣服去了集市，但是， 沒有人向他行禮，也沒有人送他禮物。

The Brahmin then returned to his house and, dressing himself in rich garments, once more setout for the market place.

婆羅門回到家裏，穿上華麗的衣服，又去了集市。

This time, everybody saluted him and made way for him and many handed him presents.

這一次， 每個人都向他行禮，給他讓路，還有許多人送他禮物。

This was the usual custom when a holy Brahmin happened to make his appearance in themarket place. Once again, the Brahmin returned to his home and changed his clothes.

按照習俗， 神聖的婆羅門出現在集市上時人們通常都會這樣做。婆羅門又回家換掉了這身華麗的衣服。

Then, taking the rich garments, he set them up on a shrine near the market.

然後，他拿着這套華 麗的衣服，把它架在了集市附近的一個聖壇上。

As he prostrates himself before them, cried continually: "O mighty garments, you areesteemed above all else in this world....

他拜倒在衣服前 面，口中唸唸有詞：“噢，偉大的衣服啊，你比世界上其他所有東 西都尊貴……”

The people gathered round in wonder. And in time came to worship the clothes as thisBrahmin was doing.

人們好奇地聚攏了過來，最後也都開始朝衣服膜拜，因爲婆 羅門在這樣做。

This custom has spread farther and farther. Now in many countries around the world, trendyand fashionable people do the same thing, though not, perhaps in the way as the Brahmindid.

現在這一習俗已經傳播得很遠很遠。世界上許多 國家趕時髦的人都在這樣做，儘管可能與婆羅門的方式不同。

It was a very foggy day in London. The fog was so thick that it was impossible to see morethan a foot or so.

Buses, cars and taxis were not able to run and were standing by the side of the road.

People were trying to find their way about on foot but were losing their way in the fog.

Mr. Smith had a very important meeting at the House of Commons and had toget there but noone could take him.

He tried to walk there but found he was quite lost. Suddenly he bumped into a stranger. Thestranger asked if he could help him.

他試圖步行前往，又發現自己完全迷失了方向。突然，他撞上了一位陌生人。陌生人問他是否需要幫忙。

Mr. Smith said he wanted to get to the Houses of Parliament. The stranger told him he wouldtake him there.

史密斯先生說，他想去下議院。陌生人對他說，他願意領他去。

Mr. Smith thanked him and they started to walk there. The fog was getting thicker everyminute but the stranger had no difficulty in finding the way.

史密斯先生向他道了謝，他們就開始向下議院走去。霧越來越濃，但這位陌生人找起路來卻毫無困難。

He went along one street, turned down another, crossed asquare and at last after about half anhour's walk they arrivedat the Houses of Parliament.

他穿過一條街，拐進另一條街，通過一個廣場，走了大約半個小時，最後來到了下議院。

Mr. Smith couldn't understand how the stranger found his way. "It is wonderful,” he said. "How do you find the way in this fog?"

史密斯先生不能理解這位陌生人是如何找着路的。“太神奇了，”他說，“這麼大的霧，你怎麼能找着路呢?”

"It is no trouble at all to me," said the stranger, "I am blind."
