109 not all，not any，not both，not either
這四個片語在涵義上各不相同。
not all的意思是“非全體”，相當於only some；not any的意思是“全不”，相當於none；not both作“僅一個”解，相當於only one；not either作“兩個都個”解，相當於neither．
請對比下列各句：
i do not know all of them．
我僅認識他們之中的幾個人（或一部分人）。
i do not know any of them．
這些人我一個都不認識。
i do not know both of them．
在這兩個人中，我只認識一個。
i do not know either of them．
這兩個人我一個也不認識。
上面四個句子亦可改寫爲：
i know some of them．
i know none of them．
i know only one of them．
i know neither of them．
值得注意的是，not all指“並不是所有的…都…”，not both指“並不是兩個…都…”。在英語中，它們稱爲“部分否定”（partial negation）。另有一些英語副詞和not 搭配使用時，也是表示類似的涵義。例：
not always＝sometimes
not everywhere = somewhere
not entirely＝somewhat
not wholly＝in some degree/to some extent
