廋與薄
1. wear thin 打折扣;逐漸消失 意思是某一樣東西在一段時間裏，它的功能和價值在逐步降低，也就是中文裏說的損耗。這可以指具體的東西，也可以用在其他方面。
My patience with him was wearing thin when hekept bothering me with trivial matters.
當他老是拿着瑣碎之事來煩我的時候，我對他就越來越沒耐心了。
2. through thick and thin 不畏艱險;在任何情況下
Through在這裏是指從頭到尾。Thick是厚薄的厚，和thin的意思剛好相反。Through thick and thin這個習慣用語是形容某樣東西或某件事，不管是在一帆風順的時候，還是在遇到困難的時候，都能持續很久。
True love is always time-tested. It can stand against anything. Take the relationship betweenmy friend Li and Zhang for example; they have been lovers since their first day in the highschool 20 years ago. Through thick and thin, they still love each other deeply.

3. spread too thin 同時做太多事情
意思是過份的擴散，就像把一小塊黃油抹在一塊很大的麪包上，黃油就很薄了。要是把spread too thin這個習慣用語用在人的身上，那就意味着一個人要做的事太多，給自己加了很多壓力，甚至到無法應付的地步。
I'm afraid my friend Karen is spread too thin this year. She's taking five courses, works 20 hours a week in the bookstore, and is on the women's basketball team. She looks tired all thetime and keeps falling asleep in her classes。
我擔心我的朋友Karen今年給自己的壓力太大。她要上五門課，每個星期要在書店裏工作二十個小時，她還是女子籃球隊的隊員。她看起來老是很累，上課的時候經常打瞌睡。
酒再來一杯!
好朋友一起喝酒，往往未動筷吃菜就先幹三杯，"Cheers"之聲不絕於耳，而且必須Bottoms up(乾杯，杯底不要養金魚)。“乾杯”還有其他的英文說法，Let’smake a toast.是其中一個。據說，從前人們在喝酒的時候，爲了加重酒味，會在杯子裏放一小片土司，而這就是這句話的由來。
英文中喝酒喝很多的人是heavy drinkers(酒鬼，就像把癮君子叫做heavy smokers一樣)，而形容一個人喝很多酒、很會喝酒則是drink like a fish，即牛飲、海量。
喜歡喝酒的人不僅自己喝，也喜歡勸別人喝。勸酒就是強迫別人喝酒，英文叫做force others to drink。
What’s Offensive: Every culture has different traditions when it comes to drinkingetiquette. Fail to consume a vodka shot in one gulp in Russia, and your host will not beimpressed. Refill your own wine glass in France without offering more to the rest of the table, and you’ve made a faux pas. 不同文化的飲酒禮儀也迥異。在俄羅斯，你若不能一口喝完杯中的伏特加酒，主人就會很不滿意。而在法國，只給自己添酒而不顧及同桌的其他客人，會被看作失禮。在韓國，女性只能給男性倒酒——不能爲其他女性倒酒——如果你想添酒，要先把杯裏的酒喝乾。在拉丁美洲，千萬不要用左手倒酒——那會帶來壞運氣。
What You Should Do Instead: Until you’re culturally fluent, leave it to your pals to pour.

英文裏還有和飲酒相關的，有趣且實用的說法：
1 quit drinking 戒酒
想表達“滴酒不沾”的意思，可以說：I don’t want to drink anything with alcohol。
2 借酒澆愁
想表達“借酒澆愁”的時候可以說：我的太太逼得我借酒消愁。
My wife drives me to drink
3 再來一杯
如果你已經點了一杯酒，但後來又想點二杯，你就可以說：Make it two. 或者Make that a double, please.
4 喝醉了
喝醉的人很少會承認自己喝醉，他們總是喜歡說：Let’s go bar-hopping. 咱們再喝一輪。Let’s drink tillwe drop. 一醉方休。
如果要說自己醉了的話，就是：I am drunk. 俚語的說法可以把 drunk 換成afloat, all at sea。還有一個跟醉酒有關的詞叫 hangover ['hæŋəuvə]宿醉，也就是指喝醉酒後隔天早上醒來頭痛等等的症狀。
