今天我們要學幾個以fight爲關鍵詞的習慣用語。大家都熟悉fight個詞，它的意思是鬥爭、搏鬥或者奮鬥。
1. fight to the bitter end 歷盡艱辛、苦鬥到最後關頭
Bitter end有一種特殊的意義。船員把船尾系錨繩的柱子叫bitt，系在這柱子上的錨繩的盡頭稱爲bitter end。所以to the bitter end就是到了盡頭，再沒有多餘的繩索了。
例句-1：Mrs Brown fought to the bitter end to keep her house, the only one left after the developers tore down all the others. But after five years she gave up and took the money.
布朗太太爲了自己的房子可真有鬥爭到底的精神，開發商把周圍所有的房子都拆光了，她還不動搖。但是她苦熬了五年之後，不得不改變初衷，接受拆遷費，搬家了。
2. knock-down drag-out fight 殊死搏鬥；激烈的論戰
Knock-down意思是擊倒，而drag-out可以解釋爲拖出來。聽了這個習慣用語你很可能會聯想到美國西部電影裏大打出手的場面。在十九世紀二十年代的美國西部這種豎着進來、橫着出去的殊死搏鬥確實是常有的事兒。下面這個例子說的就是回顧當年西部牛仔生活的電影。
例句-3：Every cowboy movie I've seen has had a knock-down drag-out fight. It's usually in a bar with everybody jumping in, knocking each other down and breaking up the furniture.
我看過的每一部牛仔片總有一場殊死搏鬥。這通常發生在酒吧。一夥人衝進來揮拳鬥毆、擊倒對方，還把傢俱砸個稀巴爛。
3. can't fight one's way out of a paper bag 軟弱無力
Paper bag是紙做的口袋，是一撕就破的東西。如果誰連個紙袋也無法掙脫的話，那他簡直就像小蟲子一般軟弱無力 了。當然can't fight one's way out of a paper bag這個習慣用語是用作比喻的。
我們來看個例子，說的是Larry聘用律師控告他的上司種族歧視。
例句-5：Larry has almost no chance to win his case, I'm afraid. The company lawyer is shrewd and very tough. And the young lawyer Larry hired looks like he can't fight his way out of a paper bag.
恐怕Larry幾乎沒有機會打贏他的官司。公司的律師非常精明強幹，而Larry聘用的年輕律師卻顯得如此軟弱無力。
