“家庭暴力”可以說是當前社會的熱門詞彙。由報道可知，“家庭暴力”的地道說法是“domestic violence”，也可稱作“family violence”。Domestic指的是“家務的、與家庭有關”，如：domestic chores（家務活）；domestic joys（家庭樂趣）。

另外，domestic也常用來形容“國內的、馴養的”，如：domestic wine（國產酒）；domestic cat（家貓）。
