A:行吧！今天咱們要聊聊健康減肥, 看看怎麼到旅行社訂飛機票，和同事談談橄欖球比賽, 還要告訴大家怎麼用美語說“修身”和“得意忘形”。

B:當然，咱們還是先花一分鐘，學一個詞。

今天我們要學的詞是tie the knot. Tie is spelled t-i-e, tie; and knot, k-n-o-t, knot. Words and idioms Beside oneself

昨天，我在公共衛生間洗手的時候，把結婚戒指摘下來放在了洗手檯上，可離開的時候忘記把戒指戴上了。等我覺得不對勁兒，想起戒指落在洗手間的時候，已經是15分鐘以後了，我趕忙往洗手間狂奔，當時的心情，可以用下面這個習慣用語來形容：

Beside oneself. Beside is spelled b-e-s-i-d-e. Beside-oneself.

beside oneself 的意思是情緒失控，發狂。在我意識到自己把結婚戒指落在了公共廁所裏時，I was beside myself! 我都快急瘋了! 好在等我衝到衛生間時，戒指還好好地在洗手檯上，幸虧那天人少!

在下面這段話中，我們要聽到另外一種情緒失控，不過是很令人羨慕的情況。我們來聽一聽：

"Hearing that we had just won the lottery was so overwhelming. We were BESIDE OURSELVES. Just think: we'd become millionaires. Now we could pay off our mortgage and put our kids through college. And there would still be enough money left to travel around the world."

這段話是說：[聽說我們贏了彩票，這消息實在太讓人吃驚了。我們簡直高興得不知道怎麼辦好。想想吧：我們是百萬富翁了。現在我們可以還清房屋貸款，供孩子上大學，剩下的錢還足夠我們周遊世界。]

我要是贏了彩票，就會找個投資顧問好好幫我管理這筆錢。很多中了大彩的人因爲揮霍無度而千金散盡，最後甚至破產。那時，They're beside themselves with fear and worry. 他陷入極度的恐懼和擔憂中。好，我們再來聽聽剛纔那段話：

在剛纔的例句中，中了彩票的人are beside themselves with joy, 得意忘形，樂暈了。而在下面這個例句中的人也遇到了意想不到的事兒，但心情卻完全不同。我們來聽一聽：

"When Rosa returned to the parking lot, she discovered that her brand new car had a big dent. Someone had hit her vehicle and not left a note. Now she had to call her insurance company, and then arrange for repairs. Aaargh! The more she thought about it, the more furious she became. She was BESIDE HERSELF with anger."

這段話是說：[羅斯回到停車場的時候發現她新買的車凹下去了一大塊。有人撞了她的車，也沒留張字條就溜走了。現在，羅斯不得不給自己的保險公司打電話，然後還要安排修車的事兒。啊! 她越想越氣，簡直是氣得發狂。]

說到撞車，我的鄰居曾經在一個下大雨的深夜裏撞了一個人，主要是因爲雨太大，她沒看到那個行人。好在當時她車開得很慢，被撞的人沒什麼大礙，不過My neighbor was beside herself with grief for not seeing the man. 我的鄰居當時只恨自己爲什麼沒看到人。好，我們再來聽聽剛纔那段話：

各位聽衆，今天我們學習的習慣用語是beside oneself，意思是“發狂，情緒失控”。

A:說起來，籌備婚禮也真是個讓人頭大的事，我那個朋友想要婚禮盡善盡美，結果自己壓力太大，變得特愛發脾氣。

B:That's typical. The stress of preparing for a wedding can turn many brides into bridezillas!

A:Bridezilla? 哈哈，我知道這個詞，這是由bride, 新娘，和Godzilla, 怪獸哥斯拉，兩個詞結合起來的，形容那些追求完美，吹毛求疵，結果變得像哥斯拉一樣兇巴巴的準新娘。

B：沒錯。For example, before their wedding, a lot of women become very self-conscious about their figures. They'd do anything to shed a few pounds and look good in their wedding gowns.

A:那是絕對的！新娘子當然愛漂亮啊。其實，要在婚禮上光彩奪目不一定非得減肥，選擇修身的禮服就可以了！

B:修身？這個是品牌麼？

A:不是！你聽聽下面的“美語怎麼說”就明白啦！

How to say it:figure flattering

Jessica在北京學漢語，她的中國朋友要是遇到了不知道用美語怎麼說的詞，就會來請教她。今天是聽衆問的：兩面派。

Jessica:吳瓊，我問你，“兩面派”用美語怎麼說？

吳瓊:Ah? Jessica, 你從哪兒學到這個詞的？

Jessica:From one of our listeners! 有個聽衆問的。

吳瓊:That's cool! Hmm... 我覺得兩面派一定是double face，對嗎？

Jessica:Close! Actually it's two-faced.

吳瓊: 哦！two-faced 兩張臉，當人一面揹人一面，兩面派。

Jessica:That's right. Sometimes a two-faced person will say nice things about you to your face, then tell others nasty things about you when you're not around.

吳瓊:哼，我最討厭這種背後捅刀子的人了。

Jessica:I know! We call these people back stabbers.

吳瓊:Back stabber? S-t-a-b-b-e-r, stabber 是用刀子捅別人的人，所以back stabber 就是在背後給人下刀子的人嘍！Jessica, 不是吹牛，這種人我一眼就能識破。

Jessica:Wow! You must be a really good judge of character.

吳瓊:judge 是法官，character 是人品，你說我是 a good judge of character，一定是說我看人看得準，眼光犀利，對嗎？

Jessica:Exactly. two-faced people can't fool you if you're a good judge of character.

吳瓊: 不過 jessica, 我覺得，two faced people和back stabbers雖然都很討厭，但他們也有些用處！

Jessica:Really?

吳瓊:Yeah. Their existence will help you see who your real friends are! 沒有他們的存在，怎麼能顯出哪些人才是真朋友呢！

Jessica:有道理！Now let's see what you've learned today.

吳瓊:第一：形容某人兩面派是two-faced;

第二：背後害人的人是back stabber;

第三：形容看人準，可以說 someone is a good judge of character.

B:楊琳，I forgot to ask─did your best friend have her wedding in the US or in China?

Winnie:Todd 在洛杉磯上學，趁着放寒假，要回阿拉斯加去和父母一塊兒過聖誕節。今天，他來到一家旅行社定機票。

Professor:Do you visit your parents on the holiday, Winnie?

MC:當然了，我可是孝順女兒呢！

Agent:Good afternoon sir, may I help you?

Todd:Yes, I need to buy a ticket from Los Angeles to the capitol of Alaska.

Agent:Alright, when would you like to leave?

Todd:I would like to leave December 24th and return January 3rd.

Winnie:聖誕節是12月25號，Todd要訂24號飛阿拉斯加的機票，這可夠趕的，萬一飛機晚點，他就趕不上和家人過平安夜了。

Professor:Well if his flight is delayed, maybe he could ask Santa Claus for a ride home.

Winnie:搭聖誕老人的車？哈哈，這可是個好主意！ Todd 還說，他要1月3號飛回洛杉磯，這樣好，可以在新年夜盡情狂歡後休息一下再出發！

Agent:Do you want a direct flight?

Todd:Yes, I want to fly non-stop.

Agent:Alright, the cheapest direct flight is $500.

Todd:Are there any cheaper flights?

Agent:Yes, there is a connecting flight with one layover for $400.

Professor:Winnie, do you know what a layover is?

Winnie:知道啊，如果你坐的不是直達航班 direct 或是 non-stop flight，而是要中途轉機的話，這個轉機就是layover, l-a-y-o-v-e-r, layover.

Professor:Yes. For example, you can say you had a three-hour layover in Chicago when you flew to New York.

Winnie:嗯，旅行社告訴 Todd 說，直飛票要500塊，有一個layover的便宜些，400塊。不知道Todd會買哪種。

Todd:Well, I'll take the direct flight.

Agent:Where would you like to sit?

Todd:Is there an aisle seat available?

Agent:No, there is only a window seat.

Todd:Alright, I'll take the window seat.

Professor:Winnie, do you like sitting in the window seat or the aisle seat?

Winnie:Window seat 就是靠窗的座位，aisle seat 則是靠過道的座位。我倒是無所謂，坐哪兒都行，不過千萬別有個大哭大鬧的孩子坐在我旁邊！

Professor:Yes, I really hate it when there is a crying baby near me on a plane. I can never fall asleep.

Agent:Would you like to fly first-class?

Todd:How much does a first-class ticket cost?

Agent:A first-class ticket is $3,000.

Todd:Umm ... I think I'll just fly in the economy class.

Winnie:頭等艙要三千塊啊！比經濟艙貴好幾倍！Professor Bowman，你知道嗎，我的夢想就是，有朝一日發了財，一定要到頭等艙過把癮！

Professor:Well, there is another way to reach your dream. You could earn frequent flyer miles.

Professor:Yes! You know, sometimes people also call economy class "coach."

Winnie:哦，原來economy class 和 coach 都是經濟艙的意思，不過要我說啊，叫“沙丁魚艙”更合適！

Todd:What if I need to cancel my trip for some reason? Can I get a refund?

Agent:You can get a refund if you cancel your trip one day before you leave.

Todd:What if I need to cancel my trip at the last minute?

Agent:In that case, the tickets are non-refundable.

Winnie:Professor Bowman, 什麼叫 at the last minute？

Professor:If you did something as late as possible, you can say you did it at the last minute. For example, "I wasn't going to give any homework at the end of class, but then I changed my mind at the last minute."

Winnie:哦，就是到最後一分鐘才臨時決定做什麼事。旅行社的人說，Todd 如果在出發當天才突然改變主意，就不能退票了。看來他還在猶豫到底是不是要回家，所以纔會問退票的事吧？

Chris早上在咖啡間跟同事Ben打招呼。

Chris:Hey, you catch the game last night?

Ben: game?

C:Baltimore defeated Texas by 17 points!

B: what sport are we talking about here?

C:Football of course!

B:ball. Football is cool. I usually try to catch the World Cup finals.

Chris問Ben, Did you catch the game last night? 意思是昨天晚上有沒有看比賽，英語裏看比賽，看錶演在口語裏都可以用動詞catch, 比如，Let's go catch a movie. 咱們看電影去。Chris說的是美式足球比賽，football，巴爾的摩烏鴉隊贏了德克薩斯人隊17分。Ben說，足球好看, 每次World Cup finals世界盃決賽我都看，他顯然是把soccer和美式足球football混了。Chris說，

C:No, I'm talking about American football. The World Cup is soccer.

B:Oh, I understand. I can't say I'm a big fan. I'm from China, and football doesn't have a really big following over there.

C:So Chinese people prefer soccer or basketball?

B:Yes, I think so. But to be perfectly honest, I'm not really a sports nut. When I was in high school I played on the school volleyball team. Are you a diehard football fan?

Ben說自己不是特別愛看美式足球，I can't say I'm a big fan. 在中國，美式足球沒有多少球迷。Football doesn't have a really big following. Following 在這裏是名詞，指粉絲，追隨者，仰慕者。Ben還說，To be perfectly honest 意思是老實說，I'm not a sports nut. 這裏的nut, n-u-t, nut是俚語，意思是對某事非常熱衷愛好的人，比如history nut, movie nut 還有Ben所說的sports nut。Ben問Chris是不是鐵桿美式足球球迷，a diehard football fan. diehard is spelled d-i-e-h-a-r-d, diehard 意思是死忠。Chris回答說，

C:Oh, certainly. I wouldn't miss a game for the world. My girlfriend says I have an addiction. And actually, if I had to choose between her and my games...I'd probably pick football.

B:It seems Americans are very passionate about sports. Is this just a part of your culture?

C:Oh, yeah! I think the love of sports starts when kids are very young. Americans come from many different backgrounds so I guess sports are something we can all enjoy together.

Chris 承認自己是鐵桿球迷，I wouldn't miss a game for the world. 不會因爲任何原因錯過比賽。not miss something for the world是一種很常見的說法，強調無論如何都不會錯過，比如，I wouldn't miss your concert for the world. 我絕不會錯過你的音樂會。Chris說，美國人熱愛體育，是從小培養的，大家來自不同背景，但是運動卻能讓彼此走到一起。

A:Well, to be perfectly honest, I'm not a sports nut either.

B:I am! ESPN is the only channel I watch.

A:那你最喜歡什麼體育比賽？

B:當然是American Football! I'm a diehard fan of the Washington Redskins. Don't you like watching the games with your friends and family, 楊琳?

A:和家人朋友一起看比賽當然好啊，我說我不是體育迷，是說我不會特意留心體育比賽，而且我自己也不愛去參加體育活動，多累啊！

B:But still, you should hit the gym once in a while. It's good for your health.
