Hanergy Thin Film Power, a solar company being investigated by Hong Kong’s stock market regulator, has lost a contract for Ikea to distribute its panels for domestic use in Europe.

The Swedish retailer said in a statement that it was ending its residential solar agreement with Hanergy and directed any customers who had bought the panels to contact Hanergy’s UK customer service arm.

The move is a blow for HTF, which rose to be worth almost $40bn before collapsing in value amid concerns about its accounting and reliance on sales to related parties. The company had previously pointed towards its agreement with Ikea as evidence that its panels were being sold on to outside customers.

HFT shares have been suspended from trading since May as the Securities and Futures Commission investigates. Until this year it was the world’s most valuable listed solar company, and its majority owner, the businessman Li Hejun, was briefly China’s richest man on paper.

Mr Li has since blamed short sellers for the company’s problems, and attacked the Hong Kong market regulator for keeping the shares suspended.

In August, HTF declared a loss for the first half of the year, having said it would make a profit, and announced plans for 2,000 job losses at its headquarters and regional offices. It blamed the loss on the cancellation of sales contracts between the parent and the listed unit.

In January, the Financial Times raised questions about HTF’s business model, highlighting how the listed company derived the bulk of its revenue from its parent group in mainland China.

Much of Hanergy’s business with Ikea in Europe stems from the solar group’s purchase of Solibro, a German thin film manufacturer. Solibro’s factory near Berlin has ratcheted down operations since October.

GS Solar, the company that controlled Hanergy’s Hong Kong-listed unit before Hanergy, sold solar panels through Ikea in the UK. That subsidiary has been moved several times among various Hanergy entities.

Ikea itself does not use Hanergy’s solar panels, according to a person in the industry. The Hanergy panels were sold at independent booths set up in its stores, in an arm’s-length relationship.

In March, HTF announced that sales for its 2014 financial year had tripled and net profits were $427m. More than half of these sales were made to its parent company, Mr Li’s privately held Hanergy Group, with only a sliver of profits coming from sales to consumers through the Ikea channel.
