我們舉例子是爲了什麼?當然是爲了論證論點。當我們在寫中間段的時候,不就是先給論點,然後通過例子來進行說明嗎?那麼當修辭目的題題目中問到的內容是例子的時候,即作者舉了這個例子是爲了什麼,我們的目標非常明確,就是在文章中找到這個例子說明的那個論點。根據西方典型的論證方式,先給論點,後進行論證,我們要找的答案就在這個例子的前一句或是前幾句。切記,作者一定會給出論點,千萬不要通過例子幫作者去想這個例子爲了說明什麼。那麼首先我如何確定題目中的內容就是例子呢?常見的舉例形式會有哪些呢?在這裏,我把例子分成兩種:明例和暗例。何爲明例?即出現了直接舉例詞,如for example,for instance等。出現在這類詞之後的內容毫無疑問一定就是例子。那麼這些例子論證的論點是什麼呢?根據這些詞的使用習慣,一般是直接出現在論點之後,那麼我們就只要找到前一句話就可以了。這是明例的情況,但在真題中出現的頻率較低,出現頻率更高的是暗例。何爲暗例?暗例就是出現了暗舉例詞或者完全沒有舉例詞。首先我們來看一下何爲暗舉例詞。我把暗舉例詞定義爲在特定語境下可以充當舉例詞的詞。比如在TPO4的第一篇DEER POPULATIONS OF THE PUGET SOUND中,原文有這麼兩句話:No doubt the numbers of deer declined still further. Recall the fate of the Columbian white-tailed deer, now in a protected status. 在第二句中有個單詞叫recall,它並不是完全意義上的舉例詞,但在這個語境中recall就充當了一個舉例詞,那麼後面的內容就是一個例子,那麼這個例子論證的論點就是它前面這句話。這類詞會有很多,比如remember,include等。暗例中還有一種情況,就是完全沒有出現舉例詞。那麼我如何確定舉例關係呢?其實論點和例子之間會存在某種形式的對應,在做題時常用到的就是通過某個或某幾個詞上面的對應來體現出這種關係。如在OG PRACTICE TEST 1第二篇THE EXPRESSION OF EMOTIONS中有這麼三句話It turns out that the expression of many emotions may be universal. Baring the teeth in a hostile way, as noted by Charles Darwin in the nineteenth century, may be a universal sign of anger. 在這三句話中,第一句是論點,二三句都是例子。那麼這兩個例子通過什麼方式與論點聯繫起來呢,首先,當然是通過順序體現出來,但更重要的是論點與例子之間出現了詞上的對應,這三句話中都出現了這個核心詞universal。以這個詞爲主線,例子在悄無聲息中就與論點起到到對應。

綜上所述,例子可以有舉例詞,也可以沒有舉例詞。掌握住了常見的舉例形式能夠幫助我們正確地完成修辭目的題中的舉例論證這種修辭目的。

託福獨立寫作獨家攻略

一、獨立寫作命題形式

託福獨立寫作的命題形式一般爲“Do you agree or disagree with the following statement…”(你是否同意下面的論斷……),要求考生就題目中的論斷給出自己的觀點,並用例證來支撐自己的觀點。字數要求300字以上,考試時間爲30分鐘。題目中的論斷涉及各種話題,比如成功類話題、工作類話題、金錢類話題、科技類話題等等。

第三類,這類題目通常是將A和B兩種事物進行比較,題目中含有“more…than…”或者“better”的字眼,對於這類題目,考生可以採取讓步式的寫法。例如以下這道題目“Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It’s better to spend money on pleasant things such as vacations than to save money for the future.”考生可以在開頭這樣寫:“Although A/B has some benefits for…, I still believe that B/A will exert more significant influence on…”

三、獨立寫作常見問題及對策
