這四個詞是同義詞，都有“工資”、“薪水”之義，但涵義和使用場合有所不同。
在這四個字中，pay是最一般的用語，常可代替其他三個詞。但pay也有其專用的場合，它特指軍隊裏的“薪餉”。例：
Farm labourers receive poor pay.
農夫的工資是很低的。
Professionals in the city enjoy good pay.
都市裏的專業人士的工資是很高的。
These officers，though retired，are on full pay．
