英語裏有不少成語和俗語都是和人體各個部份的名稱相聯繫的，有的和頭，有的和眼睛、鼻子、手和腳有關的。今天我們再講兩個和脖子有關的俗語。第一個是 pain in the neck。Pain 這個字大家都知道是痛的意思。 Neck 是指脖子。但是，pain in the neck 並不是脖子痛的意思，pain in the neck 是說某人很討厭。這個俗語非常普遍，你每天都可以聽到美國人這麼說: "He's a real pain in the neck." 這就是說：“那個人真討厭。”下面這個例子是一個飯館的老闆在說某個顧客：
例句-1:"I want to run and hide every time I see that woman come into my place. A real pain in the neck; she's always complaining about the food and the service."
這位老闆說：“每當我看到那個女人來到我飯館的時候，我總是想拔腿就跑，到什麼地方去躲起來。她可真是討厭，老是抱怨不是飯菜不好，就是服務不好。”
Pain in the neck 不是一定要針對別人說的，有時還可以用在自己身上。我們來舉個例子。下面是一個很不高興的爸爸在對兒子說話：
例句-2:"I don't want to be a pain in the neck, son, but I've reminded you a dozen times already to clean up your room. Better do it tonight, or you can't use the car this weekend."
這個爸爸說：“兒子，我並不想讓你討厭，但是我已經提醒你幾十次了，要你把房間整理乾淨。你還是今天晚上把房間打掃乾淨的好，否則，這個週末你就別想用汽車。”
下面我們要介紹的一個和 neck 有關的習慣用語是 neck and neck。 Neck and neck 是指比賽進行得很激烈，競爭雙方不相上下。 Neck and neck 這個說法原先是來自比賽，如賽跑、賽馬等。就拿賽馬來說吧，有的時候兩匹馬齊頭並進，很難分辨出那匹馬在前頭，那一匹在後頭。在有的情況下，一匹馬由於它的脖子比另一匹馬先到終點而獲勝，還有的時候甚至由於它的頭，或它的鼻子先到而成了冠軍。但是，neck and neck 現在也經常用在別的競爭方面，下面這個例子就能說明這一點：
例句-3:"Right now, only a week from the election, the republicans and the democrats are running neck to neck and none of the experts can predict which party will win."
這句話的意思是：“現在離開選舉只有一個星期了，但是，共和黨和民主黨在競選方面仍然不分上下，沒有一個專家能預測到底那個黨會在競選中獲勝。”
Neck and neck 有時還可以用在其他場合，就拿我們廣播的這課「美國習慣用語」來做例子吧：
例句-4:"I'm running neck and neck with the clock to see if I can finish on time."
這句話的意思是：“這次節目的時間已經很緊了，我正在加緊播送，不知能不能在限定時間內播完這次節目。”
