提起“北漂”族的艱辛生活，大家都會想到這幾年被稱爲“蟻族”的低收入大學畢業生，但是，在北京還有一羣人的生存條件比“蟻族”們更爲艱苦，他們多爲高中或中專學歷，居住在狹小的地下室裏，這部分人被稱作“鼠族”。

The mouse tribe, known as the shuzu, are thought to number about 1 million and are well known for living in some of the 1,374 civil air defense shelters beneath the city.

據估計，“鼠族”約有100萬人，因住在地下民用防空洞中而得名。北京的地下民用防空洞共有1374個。

在上面的報道中，mouse tribe就是“鼠族”。鼠族連同ant tribe（蟻族）、egg house（蛋屋）、dwelling in a narrow space（蝸居）、capsule apartment（膠囊公寓）等詞都是大城市生存成本高漲的產物。

大城市裏的人形形色色，並且自成“部落”，有在城市間往返的pendulum clan（鐘擺族），也有熱衷網購的code-copying clan（抄號族），有衝出都市重壓的pressure-free clan（零帕族），善於保持平衡的rainbow clan（彩虹族），也有失去工作熱情的over-drained clan（掏空族）。
