談到工作，歐洲人普遍認爲，美國人太“工作狂”（workaholic），用工作替代休閒是在“作傻”（to be a fool）。
事實確實也是如此，美國人熱衷於加班（work overtime）。比如說教師這一職業，擁有10年教齡的美國中學教師平均年薪（yearly salary）4萬美元，高於歐洲的3萬美元，但這正是由於美國教師工作時間比歐洲多了近1/3而打拼出來的。不過，問題的另一面是，美國社會競爭之激烈，是不在美國生活就很難想象出來的。美國法律（law）規定加班工作時能夠取得基本工資1.5倍的加班費，而時時擔憂“稍不留神”就有可能被劃人“窮人”階層的普通人（包括那些所謂的中產階級），絕不會放棄任何賺錢的機會。紐約州審計長辦公室曾評出2004年州政府僱員加班冠軍，冠軍得主名爲羅伯特·亨利，他當年在基本薪酬（5萬美元）以外獲得的加班收入竟高達9萬美元。
